Why is her bum red?

I've been CDing for about two months now. My DD will occasionally develop a rash of sorts. Her "girl parts" are red. It's not on her butt cheeks at all. There are no bumps or raw spots, and the edges of the rashy areas are smooth. It almost looks like the red mark you'd get on your legs if you had them crossed for too long, if that makes sense. I just changed a poopy diaper and noticed a little area that looks almost like a blister. The last time this happened, I switched back to disposables so I could slather on Triple Paste, and it didn't want to stick well to the red/blistery area. I've never seen a rash like this before. It looks almost more like a burn than a true rash.

What's causing this? Is it a sensitivity to my detergent? (I am just using Sun right now while I'm waiting for my Crunchy Clean to arrive.) I rinse well and don't see suds when I check my rinse cycles. I use a variety of diaper brands and alternate between pockets and prefolds. During the day I'll change her every 3 hours or so, but she is in the same diaper for 10-12 hours overnight.

Any ideas?

What are you using to wipe? Plain water and a clean cloth wipe is the best.

My first thoughts were detergent reaction (like "Tide burn" -not a sensitivity, but more of a chemical burn). I think this could happen when enzymes are left on the skin and react with urine.
My other thought is ammonia burn from being in a wet diaper for too long.

I'd try changing relatively soon after she pees, and/or changing to a detergent without enzymes.

Ds got a rash that looked more like a burn the last time we went out and his diaper was on for 3 hours. I asked around and was told that it sounded like ammonia burn.

My wipes are just washcloths or flannel squares and plain water. I had not heard of ammonia burn. That sounds like it could be the culprit.

Thank you for the ideas!
