Is DS's Sippy Cup Making Him Throw Up?

DS has been using the Born Free sippy cup http://www.amazon.com/Born-Free-Trai...3845184&sr=8-1 for months now, with no problems....except he recently discovered that one benefit of the "free flow valve system" is that he can turn it upside down and get water to come out onto tables, floors, rugs, puzzles, books, etc. Fun!

So last Tuesday I switched him to a Playtex First Sipster because other toddlers we know use it and it doesn't seem to leak. And, yes, it has put an end to the water-play antics. However, it has a completely different valve system than the Born Free and DS seems to be swallowing a lot of air. He is burping a lot more often now. And then, Sunday morning, 6:30am, about 5 minutes after nursing and laying back down to sleep, he threw up (this would be at least 10 hours or more since he last drank from the sippy). After cleaning him and our bed up and laying back down for about 10 minutes, he threw up again (not much this time since all the milk came up the first time). He didn't seem sick before of after. Yesterday was totally fine. Then, this morning he asked for his sippy while I was making breakfast. A few minutes after eating some of his oatmeal with blueberries, he threw up a bunch of blueberry water. Then he seemed fine. The only other thing of note is that his appetite has been decreased the past couple days, but only compared to the few days that proceeded it, when he seemed hungrier than usual.

About a week ago we had a playdate with a baby who, two hours after we left, threw up and then threw up a few more times, but was fine the next day.

So, is it the sippy? Is it some kinda gastrointestinal thing he picked up that took a week to show up?

DD uses the Born Free sippy too. Have you tried going back to it just to see if he the throwing up stops? I've always liked the Born Free valve system because the milk doesn't come out too fast.

I switched him back to the Born Free this afternoon. However, there have been two new developments.

He just had a big ol' diahrrea (his first ever).
And I just found out that the diaper he wore from 9pm last night until 11am today was completely dry (he nursed twice during that time). Explains why he was asking for his sippy right away today, even after we nursed.

So, I'm thinking it's his first tummy bug - although I don't think the sippy was helping and I don't think we'll go back to using it.

Awww, sorry your little one may have a bug.

Sounds like a tummy bug to me. Your child is just 2 mths. younger then my grandson, who will be 2 in May. My grandson can drink out of a sippy just fine, but when he is at my house I am getting him to drink out of a regular cup. He doesn't get so gassy that way. Just a thought. I have noticed when he drinks out of a sippy, he gets real burpy, but not with a cup.

I have a little "heavy weight" shot glass that he sometimes practices drinking out of. He's still in the "I need to bite the rim while I drink phase," but I'll keep trying. Definitely way more burpy with the new "standard type" sippy, so back to Born Free it is. Plus, I just read that the Playtex First Sipster has PVC in it (that's what I get for NOT researching products...which is so unlike me.).

The was a little more diarrhea this morning when I changed him. He's not embracing the idea of eating bananas, applesauce, toast (ate just the littlest bit of each yesterday, but did eat 1.5 scrambled eggs prior to the first diarrhea). This seems mild for a tummy bug...? Everything I read describes LOTS of vomiting and/or diarrhea. Crossing my fingers!

It does sound like a tummy bug to me. Those can hang on for awhile, especially in little ones who've never had one before and thus have very little immunity to them.

The sippy may have been causing him to drink a whole lot at once and get a lot of air with it-- which is going to cause an upset stomach to say, "enough is enough!" and revolt. Probably under normal circumstances, he'd burp and then be fine.

Be aware, if your LO eats dairy, that temporary lactose intolerance is common in anyone who's had intestinal injury or infection, so that you might want to limit liquid cow's milk and ice cream for a few weeks, if your LO gets such things.

Just wanted to chime in and say it sounds like you guys have the dreaded 8-16 hour thing that was going around our area a couple weeks ago. I know you said he threw up, then was fine, then threw up again, which seems a little strange to me. But it totall sound slike a stomach bug to me.

It started for us christmas night in my 14 month old. He seemed FINE. Then out of no where, :Puke. He threw up three times, slept all the way threw the night, and was fine the next morning. Then it hit my two year old just as quickly and without warning that sunday after noon. He puked non stop (And it was just spit and phlegm after a while) from 230-8pm. Then like someone flipped a switch, was fine. WEll then it hit me that monday afternoon about 230, and it stayed with me twice as long. It also hit my mother that tuesday morning around 630am, and my sister in law that night around midnight (They had both been in direct contact with my kids that Sunday) Then it hit every single one of the girls at my kids daycare, they just all dropped like flies right before the new year. It was awful. Whatever this thing is, it moves fast, hard, and comes and goes pretty quick. And one of the girls at my daycare did say they were told by a doc that the incubation period can last up to 7 days. I didn't think that was possible for a stomach bug, but I guess you never know.

I am in NY just south of lake ontario, so I am not far from you. It seems totally plausible to me that whatever went around our city (I was hearing from teachers in different districts that they were getting it, and my boss's husband got it) is now in your neck of the woods.

Oy! That sounds horrible, although good that it was so brief in the kids. The sick kid we played with apparently threw up a bunch of times in about a 18 hour period and then seemed fine. I think he's exposed to more kid germs than my DS because his mom babysits for other kids and also tutors a bunch of kids.

It seems weird that DS would throw up twice right together between 6:30-7:00am one day, then go about 30 hours and throw up again, then about 5 hours later was the massive diarrhea. He's had some diarrhea today, too - but he's eaten so little that the diapers haven't been horrible. I am a little concerned about him getting dehydrated. Because of the liquidy nature of diarrhea, it's impossible for me to tell if he's actually peeing, too. He's not nursing more than usual (he nurses about 4-5 times day most days), and while he does ask for his sippy, he's not drinking much. I was going to look up recipes for homemade "Pedialyte" and see if he would drink that. He did eat about half a banana and half a graham cracker today.
