What is it and why do I need it? I saw something on Dr. Oz and I only caught part of what he said. I did catch that it is good for you.

It is loaded with natural probiotics, more than any store bought version of probiotics you can get. Probiotics are necessary for proper gut functioning and digestion.

My son is allergic to dairy, so we make homemade water kefir for him to drink! 100% dairy free!!! Others make their own milk kefir at home as well, although you can buy it in the stores, it's much cheaper to make at home!

Milk kefir

I make goat milk kefir for my son and homemade yogurt for my husband. It's much easier to make kefir than yogurt, only you need to have the grains. I got mine from someone in the same city, for free. Most kefir makers will share their grains (because good grains multiply rather quickly) with you. If you can find someone locally you can pick up the grains for free. If not, some will mail the grains to you as long as you pay the postage.

A unbias explanation of kefir:

Here's a site of the kefir guru:

You may want to post a thread here mothering.com, and other kefir groups to see if someone lives near you.

I got mine from this site:

Not sure if the list is up-to-date but it doesn't hurt to give it a try.

I don't really like the taste of milk kefir (it's not a bad taste, just one I haven't aquired yet) so I put it in my morning Green Smoothie and it's very yummy. I also converted some of my milk kefir grains to juice, and you get a fizzy juice beverage with all of the probiotics and less sugar since the cultures feed on the sugar. I drink my juice kefir in place of soda.
