DD doesn't normally watch TV, but twice in the last fortnight we've had to resort to it There isn't anything on the TV (we only have terrestial channels) & the DVDs we have are all too old for her. What does your toddler like?

Favorites at our house include:

Frances (as in Bread and Jam for Francis)
Franklin (the Turtle)
Little Bear

Frances is produces by Jim Henson Co. and Franklin and Little bear are part of the Nickelodian Jr. line-up.

All are based on children's books which I like because we also have the books.

Have you heard of Classical Baby? It is three dvds and they are just really nice visual images set to classical music. It's not like baby einstein, it's better! One dvd has actual classic art that comes to life in animated form. Like, Monet, Degas, etc.

We received the set when ds1 was born and used them when he was really young. My ds2 chose one last night (we haven't watched them for a while), and my 4.5yo ds1 watched and enjoyed (still!)

DD likes Sesame Street and Toot & Puddle.

She really likes Sesame Street more when she was younger. Although we're mostly TV-free, we used the TV as a distraction when she needed a nebulizer treatment. She hated the nebulizer, so Sesame Street was a wonderful distraction.

Now, we allow TV maybe once a week? And DD usually chooses Toot & Puddle, which is based on a set of books by Holly Hobbie. The colors are soft, its not overly obnoxious or flashy and the themes are gentle, usually about traveling somewhere and experience something related to that culture. As a parent, I really like the show as well.

ds loves Pingu ( I kinda do too!) You can "watch instantly" on netflix. (you can do that with a lot of things on netflix so you can check them out)

there is an eric carle story one that ds likes (very hungry caterpillar, mixed up camelon, papa get the moon for me.... you can watch all of those on youtube)

ds is also a big fan of signing time and baby signing time

his bff introduced him to Richard Scarry movies Busy Town and Busy People (These are my least favorite and I have kinda stopped watching them, he still watches them at bff's house sometimes when bff's mom is watching them)

The only DVD DD has watched (she is 21m) is Dan Zanes All Around The Kitchen. It is all music. 1/2 is music videos & the other 1/2 is a live show.

Go to www.hulu.com and search for "Harold and the Purple Crayon" It is very sweet, slow moving and gentle. It was the first show we let DS start to watch just before he turned two.

DS was sick last week and I was sick all weekend (we were both throwing up and totally unable to do anything) so we ended up watching a bit of Sesame Street even though we normally do not allow screen time at all. We used the Sesame Street website to watch and I chose mostly older "classic" clips of songs, not skits which wouldn't keep my 17 month old's attention.

Sesame Street
Baby Signing Time
Winnie the Pooh
Barney if you can stand him (I'm a little choosy about which ones I get)
I've heard good things about Blues Clues but haven't watched it yet.
Dora was okay for once in a while, but a little annoying.

*Some* of the We Sign DVDs are good, we like Rhymes and Animals.

Blues Clues and Oswald are good for little ones, Little Bear is good too but there are a couple of episodes that are potentially scary. I absolutely loathe Franklin (he's whiny, and every episode is about him doing something wrong/mean and learning a lesson from it).

my 20 month old has been enjoying some of the animal videos from baby einstein--world animals esp. I think the baby noah might be good. He also likes baby signs (we have been watching these last one for the last few months). He doesn't seem to like Elmo videos or the world music baby einstein.

Signing Times, Sesame Street, Letter Factory.

I know they get a bad rap, but my DS loves the Baby Einstein vids with Marlee Matlin signing in them.

My DD is 19 mo. and loves the Cedarmont kids DVD's. They are all singing with children playing. They are a bit low-budget but DD loves the music and they have action ones where they do hand movements to the songs. They do Christian DVD's as well as non-Christian DVD's.
