Update on my son and learning to read....

Well he is doing so well he doesn't qualify for that Title I (I think thats the name) tutoring. He is actually reading at grade level!

He does still qualify for NCLB tutoring services. Which has become a nightmare because Sylvan is NOT going to be in the school or across the street at the church like they were apparently last year. So our option is to take him to the Center or they will arrange to have a taxi come get him and bring him home. Oh H*ll no! I am NOT putting my kindergartener in a taxi by himelf with a stranger! The problem is the Center would be on Saturday's from 9 to Noon. This won't work. We have one car and my husband works every other Saturday (or sometimes two in a row) from 9 to Noon. So I have no way of getting him there. However, after talking with his teacher she said because of our transportation issues, we don't have to do Sylvan. That she is continueing to work with him two times a day during the school time. I would like him to take Sylvan, because the more help he has, the farther ahead he will be. KWIM?

Okay, but here is the kicker. I have been having this concern in the back of my mind about his vision. I noticed he squints now and then. He also tends to want to sit close to the TV. Okay, the TV thing can be a habit that alot of kids go through. So I made an appointment with Opthalmologist at Walmart that looked at my eyes and my husband's. She is very nice and I knew she had little ones. Well he needs glasses! The kid is far sighted! He can see the blackboard, but of course he is going to have trouble reading the book or papers on his desk! Glasses are ordered.

Moral of the story. If your kid is having trouble learning to read, take them to a private Optometrist or Opthalmologist and have their eyes checked. The little vision screen thing they do pre-kindergarten is not that great. It generally is only going to catch near sightedness.

Glad your ds is doing so well now! Good for you for catching his need for glasses. And thanks for putting the thought out there for us all.
