Contact lenses/ UPDATE about appointment in post 26! - Page 2

Zenni optical has the cheapest glasses around. $8 for a complete pair, $5 flat shipping. So $13 will get you a pair of glasses.

DH and I each get 2 pair of glasses, and 1 pair each of RX sunglasses (an additional $5) and it costs us $63.

Even now, when I get a new exam, they give me a trial pair and ask me to put them in and then recheck to make sure they fit right. It's part of the exam and I even go to Wal-mart for an exam, not a fancy eye drs office. It seems odd that they'd ever charge $300 for a fitting, that they wouldn't help her learn to put the contacts in/out and check her afterward. Every place I have been has had most prescriptions on hand (even when I wore a toric lens, they had it on hand). I know they can't keep every single prescription on hand, but unless it's a specialty lens, they should have the most common ones on hand. You probably would have to pay even if the contacts didn't work for her, b/c the eye dr has done the service. However, every place I have been has also included a glasses prescription along with the contact prescription so it's not a total waste of money. Unless she has an unusual eye condition, she can probably get an eye exam at another place and be just fine.
This. My contacts are very much a specialty lens. But even so, my eye dr (also wmart) almost always has something very close to my RX (to try out if I want). Never been charged extra for a fitting. None of us have, and 3 of us in this house wear contacts.

DD's appointment is today, so I wanted to re-read & remember all the lovely advice that I was given. I thought that it might be helpful to others

I like 1-800-contacts, easy to use.

I wear gas permeable contacts. With my vision insurace I pay around $130 for exam and contacts. However they last me about 2 years. I've never worn soft contacts so the idea of buying and using new lenses frequently seems foreign to me. Hope your DD's appt. went well.

Update

It went pretty good. Her eyes did change as she thought. She was given a sample pair of contacts that the doctor put in & took out for her eyes, he said that they fit perfect & they do seem to. But didn't try ona any other pairs. He made sure that my sister was going to help teach her to put them in & out, because he doesn't do that anymore. But he did not go over it with her, he gave us a hand out all about it though, that I must have left at the office...oops. We were not charged anything but our co-pay & insurance was charged the regular exam fee. My sister helped her get them in & out. This morning she was able to get them in without guidance first time with one eye & 3rd try the other. She is so excited to be able to see without glasses. I went ahead & ordered her a years supply from visiondirect.com which had the best price ($83.56) that I could find online for her brand (proclear)! I do feel like she should have a pair of glasses in her new Rx though for back up.

As far as getting glasses on my own..... he gave me that Rx for glasses as well, without me asking, but it didn't have all the info that Zenni Optical asks for. So I took out the little paper where I wrote what info I needed & asked if he could provide it so that we can get glasses online. He didn't like that! He told me it was a horrible idea & that he wouldn't provide me any more info than what he already had given me & that I was on my own. I explained that if I'm purchasing contacts that I can't also afford expensive glasses (his prices start at $100). He said I should go to Sears or JCPenny, even Wal-Mart if price was a concern, but highly advised me against getting them online. Said order your contacts online if you want, but please not glasses, they are different. Told me to be sure I go to a place that has a license from our state.

Well last year when I bought glasses from his office we had nothing but problems with them! I wish I spoke up, but I'm not one to argue I was already feeling bad that he was so against me ordering them online. The glasses that she got last year from his office were plastic frames. They called me when they were ready to pick up, I picked them up while she was at school & they never fit them to her face or told me that anything needed to be done. I've since heard that they should heat them & adjust if needed, at least check them on her & see how they fit! They cost $100 & one of the screws didn't hold so they had to put in a longer one & they scratched her lens when they were repairing it, the girls in the office gave me attitude when I pointed out the scratch. They replaced the lens that they scratched, but she has had the same problem with the screw loosening & the arm flopping. She barely wore those glasses, now the Rx has changed & frankly why should I pay them $100 for new frames when the service that they provided the first time was no better than what I could have done ordering on my own? And these are just backups to the contacts.

So I was just looking on Zenni & I believe that the only thing I need that I don't have is pupillary distance. Should I call & demand they give me the info, which should be in her chart, because he did measure yesterday. Or should I use the info that I found online to measure it myself? She already picked out a pair from Zenni, it would come to about $24 with shipping. Or I could take her to Walmart & get $38 frames (I see advertised on TV with a one year guarantee) I believe they will also measure for me? We have to drive about a 1/2 hour to a Walmart with a vision center though, to pick them out, to pick them up. So 2 hours in the car just to get the glasses, that is if she finds something in that price that she likes! So factor in gas too! WWYD???

You can measure pupil distance yourself. My husband did it himself with a ruler that measures mm ...and he ordered glasses online which came out great! In fact, I can't wait to tell him about Zenni so we can order more (we ordered from another more expensive place online).

...and I'd find another doctor.

We went to Wal-mart for our prescriptions, our insurance pays 100% for glasses (less co-pay), but only up to I think $40 for contacts prescriptions, so we had a bit out of pocket. They gave me a free pair of contacts for fitting purposes, and were very nice. We got our glasses/contacts online. Hope that helps

Yeah I looked how to measure PD & it looks pretty easy I just need a ruler that measures in mm.

DD just called from drama & informed me that she lost a contact lens on stage she thinks, & couldn't find it! She didn't even make it through a whole day. Is is comon to lose a lens? I ordered her a years supply earlier today, but it will take a few days to ship. I just hope that this is going to work out well for her!

you must have pupillary distance for glasses!!! Let me tell you my experience w/ that....

I paid a lot of money for a pair of glasses and figured they had done all of that. I kept getting headaches. I didn't know what was wrong, but something was. So I paid OUT OF POCKET for another eye exam. Also went back to the place from the first exam. Finally, I remembered that no one measured my pd and went back. Huge hassle and headaches for weeks. THat's why local guys don't want you to buy online. I'd ask him to give it to you and plead your case. Money is tight everywhere right now. If they don't understand that, then they've got biggerproblems.

I've been wearing contacts for about 17 years now and have never had a lens just pop out of my eye. That's not to say it doesn't happen, but I've never had it happen. I have rubbed my eyes and had the lens fold up and come out that way. I've also rubbed my eyes and had the lens fold up and get stuck under my upper eyelid. The first time that happened, I thought my lens fell out, but eventually it did come back down. It felt like an eyelash was stuck in my eye when that happened. Losing a lens is probably more common when a person first starts wearing lenses, but it can happen anytime.

I've worn them for about the same and I've never had one pop out either but I could see it happening if you put the thing in backwards and it flips trying to right itself. My mom had one slip behind the eye as well, said it wasn't pleasant. I miss my lenses, my eyes just haven't tolerated them much since I got preg with my 3 yr old. Before that I nearly lived in them, went in when I got up and didn't come out until I went to bed, got prego and bam, had to wear glasses
