with both my other two pregnancies, the flexible ones were trying to work their way through the skin sometime in the 8th month, so I ended up taking them out and having to get repierced after my first...didn't bother with the second because I knew I was having a third, so I'll just get it redone after this one.

I've heard some women have luck with stringing fishing line through because it's thin enough to not work through the skin, but I never could get it to work (just couldn't thread it through the hole).

a friend of mine used fishing line, her husband ground the point off of a small needle and threaded the fishing line through it and used that to get it through the hole.

i certainly would not use a sharp needle to do it though.

I've heard fishing line can work or a silk thread. You can buy non sharp needles (like the ones used for cross stitch).

I'm 26 weeks now and my ring is fine. I've left one ball off for a while just in case it needs to move I guess. I suspect I'll get some warning signs if I have to remove it but nothing yet.

I had no problems leaving mine in w/babies 1 and 2. With baby 3 who was 2lbs bigger I got 2 stretch marks that form a V from leaving it in. With #4 and 5 I took it out around 35 weeks and put it right back in the day of the birth with no problem. I just had baby #5 last week and I tried to put my original 14ga ring that was used the day of piercing and it wouldn't go but a smaller one did....I can't remember where I put the one I took out this time but I'll put the smaller one in every couple of days till I remember where I put the right one LOL.

I'm on #3 and I've never had to take it out. I did buy those flexible curved barbells just in case but never had to use them.

I had one with my first pregnancy, but it grew out so much that by the time I finally gave up and took it out, the hole was almost 1/2" away from the original site! That's also the first place I got stretch marks, probably because I kept my metal rings. not so attractive.

I thought about getting it repierced when i was done having kids, but have been leaning more toward the teeny tiny sparkly nose ring instead. no chance of stretch marks, and less opportunity for things to catch and rip.

I left mine in until about 7 months last pregnancy. It was a fairly new piercing, so afterward it had closed up a little, but nothing I couldn't just push through. I'm glad I didn't have to get it redone. This time, it's been pierced for so long, that it doesn't close up anymore. I haven't had a ring in it for months and I can still slide one in easily.

There is also the chance you won't need to be re-pierced, even if you don't use something to keep the hole open.
When pregnant with DS, I took mine out (my belly button goes completely flat and stretches out so I'm sure that would have caused the piercing to migrate). Even without using anything to keep the hole open I was able to put the jewelry back in months after he was born without any problem.

FWIW, I had my piercing for about 7 years prior to becoming pregnant.

I kept my ring in throughout my entire pregnancy and birth. I didn't get incredibly big however, and I switched to a curved barbell. (I normally have a C-shaped ring). If you search online you will find flexible barbells that many people use. You can also increase the length of the ring while you're pregnant and then switch back once you're back to pre-baby belly size.

Good luck

I took mine out because an ultrasound tech scared me with her stories of horrible stretch mark/scars she'd seen from keeping it in. I didn't know about the pregnancy ones at the time. I was a bit sad. But you know what, about two months after DS was born, I thought I'd see if I could get a ring back in and it hadn't grown over at all! After 9 months out, no problem. I'd had it pierced for ~10 years, but maybe just lucky.

i had to take mine out at only 12 weeks with my first because it hurt sooo bad, it was not liking the stretching and it felt like my body was rejecting the piercing (the outside skin was getting thinner) .. i was never able to get it back in and the skin in that area turned into one big stretch mark (didn't stretch like the rest of the skin due to scar tissue) so it would have looked silly anyway.. the scar caused a lot of pain during my 2nd pregnancy and i assume it won't feel too nice this time either.. i really regret ever getting the piercing but can't change that now ..

I'm 29 weeks now and just took mine out last week.

The problem that I had was that my bellybutton has stretched from all sides enough that it wasn't actually my bellybutton that was pierced anymore. It looked like I'd had my stomach pierced! So since both ends were out of my bellybutton it was getting rubbed by my shirts, and I was scared it would get caught on something, considering I'm not exactly masterful at wielding around this big belly. It was all red and angry looking at the top when I took it out. My plan is to hopefully be able to put it back in for maternity pictures, and not have it look all red. I'm also hopeful it won't close up...my ears never really close up (sometimes it's a bit of work to get earrings through), and I've had my bellybutton pierced for about 8 years.

I only had a 16 ga eyebrow ring in there anyhow, so hopefully I'll be able to get a 16ga back in again.
