MRSA Help

My Mom has been in the hospital since late sunday night. She had a paper cut on her finger (Friday night) which got infected and she began running a fever. She is a nurse, suspected something was wrong, and was admitted for IV antibiotics b/c her fever was 104.

Monday they continued with IV abx (Unasym and added Vancomycin) b/c they suspected MRSA. They took cultures which will be back tomorrow or Thursday. Her fever went down with tylenol but breaks through to 101 even with 1000mg of tylenol every 4 hours round the clock.

Yesterday they did surgery to do debridement of her tendon sheath b/c the infection spread all the way up to her armpit. They added a 3rd abx (gentamicin), fever still persists this morning. She's now on a morphine drip for pain b/c they put a drain in her had to flush it every 2 hours.

I just spoke with her. Her potassium dropped and she needed a supplement (i'm guessing from the abx). She is complaining of a cough and her chest feeling heavy but they say that's from the tube from surgery. Her cholesterol dropped to 100 so they took her off of her lipitor. She also told me they added a 4th abx but she couldn't read the name and said it was Primax (coulnd't find that on internet).

No infectious disease consult. She's at a very small hospital being treated by our family dr (who she also works for). My dad and brother are there but they are saying I can't be around b/c I'm nursing and the MRSA possibility is not ruled out. Just wanted to run this by you mamas to see if anyone has BTDT and if it sounds like they are doing everything appropriately.

I told my dad he needs to find out what the game plan is if her fever is not down by tonight. Any suggests appreciated!
TIA

I too am and RN - this sounds like a super nasty infection and I would suggest that if she isn't improving RAPIDLY they should push for a transfer to a tertiary hospital with more resources such as hand specialists and infectious diseases. Especially considering she is a nurse and her hands are part of her livelihood... good luck!

thank you for your reply!
she seems to be doing much better now, her fever has been down for 24 hours (below 100) and her cough is gone. they are keeping her on the IV abx but her blood culture came back and it was positive for strep and staph but not MRSA (dr said he's 99% sure now that it isn't MRSA). they are going to keep her in for 24 hours once they remove the IV abx and switch her to oral, so the plan is for her to be there until tomorrow or monday.
as for her hand, the surgeon said it looks good and is healign nicely but she is still in pain and i think it may just take a while for her to get back full function.
again, thank you for your reply!

I would do topical coconut oil on the wound to help prevent MRSA.Magnesium, zinc and vit C to help with healing and detoxification. Homeopathic silica or hypericum for wound healing. And whole food probioitcs to strengthen her immune system.
