Coughs A lot - But Not Sick?

My babe is 4months and for awhile now has always had a cough. I have noticed it for a long time, but it wasnt happening enough to be concerned. Then he had a cold around xmas and it seemed worse, but made sense. He's not had the cold now for at least a week but is coughing LOTS throughout the day. Its a dry cough. Almost sounds fake. Yet, it doesn't SEEM like he does it for attention. My MIL thinks its from reflux (he spits up almost every time i BF him - and dr. wanted to put him on zantac but i declined - since he is gaining STEADILY and doesn't seem to be bothered or upset when he spits up/burps etc...)

She also thinks it could be because he has a dairy sensitivity and i eat TONS of dairy.

I've also heard it could be a sign of teething. He has been drooly for the last couple weeks - but i don't see/feel anything. The dr. also didn't notice any buds.

Does anyone else have a baby that coughs a lot?

DD was like that. In her case it WAS both a dairy intolerance and reflux - both of which she outgrew somewhere between 9-11 months (for the most part) - she was medicated for the reflux until almost a year as she WAS in pain (lots of arching, shrieking, needing to be upright, etc).

My first thought is asthma, since I have it. I got it as a child and when I was younger and didn't know what was going on, I coughed a lot because my lungs/throat tickled when I started to have some wheezing. It also feels better for a very brief time after you cough.

What happens if you cough back at him? If he smiles and does it more, its for attention would be my bet. My little guy did that tons when he was that age - and it was always for attention!

I think dairy allergy is a good theory, since babies tend to cough a lot if they have any post nasal drip (even if it sounds like a dry cough)...and dairy can definitely cause a drip.

Our baby has been coughing for a few weeks. I've been thinking it's either a cold or from all the drool related to teething. So maybe teething?
