Things I should have tattooed on my hand when DD1 was a baby:

1. Prefolds rock...but not on newborns.

2. NEVER EVER EVER put the baby in a coverless flat.

3. Line drying works fantastically well on eliminating stains, even if it's cool and cloudy outside.

Yep...still true...as I clean poop off the crib sheet and throw it in the wash to be line dried on the next non-rainy day....

Aah yes! So many details that I'm sure will come back to me as I relearn the hard way. It's been 5 years since I CD'd a newborn and I'm expecting a learning curve, too!

So would you say flats are better than prefolds for a newborn? I can't afford to buy all fitteds for the nb stage. I was planning on just getting a mix of pfs and flats (with covers, lol) and seeing how that works.

I don't like flats at all, on any baby of any age, except in laundry emergencies and on vacations. I keep a few around the house mostly to remind myself of why I don't like them, so I don't buy an entire stash and then discover I don't like it.

I LOVE prefolds, just not on newborns, especially at night. Can you afford half a dozen fitteds to use at night? I just can't master changing a prefold on a newborn while I'm half asleep. I tried and failed with both babies!

My daughter was a year old when we tried flats and I've loved them but they definitely are not for going coverless!

making notes while I CDed my first I didn't as a newborn. Can I ask how big your LO was/is? A of now the doctors are predicting I'll have another tiny one and I'm trying to decide if I want to actually have some more TINY diapers around. or if fitted are easier if maybe getting a dozen on these mighe be worth it..
http://www.maternitycorner.com/miva/...oduct_Count=13 they carry smalls that will fit up to 8lbs (in my experience with the other sizes probably a bit more) and it wouldn't cost me much... I remember how my first just swam even in preemie sposies....
I could also get some preemie prefolds cheep but now I'm wondering if going for the fitted may be worth it?

I'm SO glad you posted this! I was planning on getting a whole NB stash of GMD prefold-fitteds , but started thinking about cutting down how many fitteds I was going to get, and get half prefolds (and get a whole bunch). Crisis averted!

I think you start to forget how poop-tastic explosionriffic newborns are until you're back in the thick of it. Thank you for reminding me, just in time.

I LOVED PREFOLDS ON MY NEWBORN!!

But then again, I'm an expert folder, teehee! (trifolded and rolled in at the legs to create gussets to hold in the runny poop). I really agree on the line drying thing though.. totally. Though I haven't been too excited to run outside to get stains out in the 25 degree Chicago weather.

My first child was 6 pounds, 5 ounces at birth and grew really fast. My second was 7 pounds, 8 ounces at birth and is growing more moderately.

I also loved prefolds on my last newborn. All I had for him was infant prefolds. I never got around to buying the few fitteds I had planned on. LOL

Another one here who loved the infant prefolds!! I suppose the difference is that I never had to change a night diaper when he was that young. And he was only able to wear the GMD orange edge for about three weeks, and the yellow edge for two months. We've been in red-edge ever since and its looking good to last for awhile thank goodness.

add me to the list of newborn prefold lovers. I thought I would hate them but they were the only diapers I reached for. I did have some fitteds for the snappi challenged grandparents but I only used them when I ran out of prefolds. I also bought some x-small fuzzi bunz for going out but never once used them. I did/ do the angel wing (?) fold --I think that's what it is called-- with thirsties covers and never had a blowout.

And YES! Hanging the diapers in the sun is the best way to get out stains! I even do it for the times I drip tomato sauce on my white shirts and every time the stain comes out 100%. It's like magic lol! I also have a stack of clothes to be hung out when the sun finally decides to make a cameo.
