Are training pants different than cloth diapers???

Because my ds really hates his cloth right now. It is motivating him to go on the toilet, but most of the "potty training" stuff I've read keeps talking about training pants. I think he knows very well when he is wet. Do I need these or would they help in any way? I'm just not really sure what they are.

I think the difference is that with training pants they are sometimes thinner and look more like underwear. For some kids having underwear like garments can really help with the learning because they pull them down and they make them feel more grown up because it's not a diaper even though in reality some can hold just as much.

It really depends on the brand or type though. The Diaper Pin has a reviews section with training pants in it and the reviews varied from very absorbent to thick underwear.

you don't have to do training pants if you don't want to.

I didn't use them as part of potty training any of my kids. (we use more of a naked-all-day method)
I did at one point use Learners to catch overngiht accidents but that was well after daytime training, when i just wnated ot dithc the nighttime disposable pullups.

I think training pants are a huge waste of money. IMO, to potty train, just keep the kid naked for a few days and keep putting him on the potty. We were done in 3 days with this method. IMO, training pants still feel like a place to poop and pee even if you think they are different. We have 2 boys who went on the potty without ever having training pants and it really only took 3 days each time.

I feel like it is important when potty learning to make a switch to underwear or trainers to make it clear to the child that a new approach is being taken and the diapers are in the past. I make trainers that are like underwear in style and comfort but have a built in PUL layer so pee does not stream out when accidents occur. Very few toddlers potty train in 3 days and most families can expect a missed for up to a year. Children get busy and excited or can't communicate their needs yet. So a good training pants are valuble and offer confidence to the parents to go out in public without a diaper on.
I would like to see more parents start the process of potty learning around 18 months with trainers in the day. It is just part of a new rythem and a chance to establish potty learning as normal.
I have some customs here http://hyenacart.com/BatikBum/index.php?c=0&p=28904
