Mamas,

I posted asking for help in the Birth and Beyond section here: http://www.mothering.com/discussions...1#post14955529

We have an 8 day old that we have to give a pill to every day due to her PKU test coming back with abnormal thyroid levels. If you are so inclinced could you check out the link above and give me your best thoughts on how to accomplish this?

Please and thank you.

Good luck Mama. Hopefully, we can get you some suggestions here. Plenty of support here too.

Did you get the follow up test?

The Newborn Screen is just a screen. You need to have his/her blood tested again to see if he/she does have congenital hyperthyroid before you give anything.

We went through the same with our youngest. He eventually tested negative for thyroid disorders, but it took weeks before we had the results.

Good luck.

Yep, this confusion is why my brother is on a permanent HRT.

We had the original test at the hospital, and then again at another hospital the night they told us of her test results. Twice the blood work has come back all kinds of wrong with the thyroid, and this only confirmed it with our PCP. I wonder if the endocrinologist will take more blood tomorrow?

I was hoping her thyroid was messed up because maybe mine was messed up. I'm going to ask about that, and see if I can be tested. But five days after her birth, her hormone levels should be hers, not mine, right?

I know that your pharmacist said it could not be compounded, but I would bet $ that your pharm is not a compounding pharmacist. Technically, all pharmacists can compound, but only a few do more than the most basic compounding. The compounding pharmacy we use said almost anything can be compounded. (in contrast, our regular pharmacy can make tamiflu in liquid and those kinds of simple compounding). A compounding pharmacist can make their very own formulations. My oldest ds has taken heart meds as a preemie infant where the dose was highly calibrated--he got .3cc per dose. There are 5cc in a teaspoon, so you can see how precise it was. It was only stable for 2 weeks, so we had to fill it twice a month, keep it refrigerated, and shake well. My youngest ds gets allegra as suppositories and benedryl compounded as a transdermal gel. I can do a google search with the terms "compounding pharmacy mycity mystate" and it pulls up the one we use. I also found this site that might be helpful; I know nothing about them but might be a place to start.

Unitl you can get it straightened out, I would crush it and make a paste with something sweet and try to get her to suck it off my finger.
