white noise machine?

what noise machine do you use, and why?

when crying, my 5mo calms down almost instantly when we rock him next to our stackable dryer (on, obviously).

we'd like to get a white noise machine, but don't know which one to buy. i'd love to hear which one you use, and what you like about it. what you don't like too, please.

here is what i'd like in a wn machine:

*volume is controllable, and can get loud.

*more than one sound choice

*flowing water (rain, shower, etc)

*affordable

*one that plays as long as it's turned on (opposed to a timer)

thanks for your help!

We use the HoMedics SoundSpa Lullaby With Picture Projection. Its got everything you're asking for and it's on $18. You can find it at walmart.com. We bought it when ds was just born and have been using it every night since then (he's 17 mo).

I got the Sound Sleeper from Babies R Us. It cost $23.99.

It has everything you mentioned. It either goes off after 60 minutes or stays on until you turn it off. You can use it with batteries or plug it in and it offers a lot of sound options (30 according to the link), with volume control.

I love the sound of the ocean waves and fall asleep with it at night with my co-sleeping 7 mo old son or whenever he naps. We got it when he was 2 mo old.

It also has a lifetime warranty! Just save your receipt and probably the contact info for the company.

I slept with one before baby and need it since I live in a city/loud apartment. We've been using the humidifier for ages since she needed it for allergies anyway but running it that much is a lot of $ on filters! I just ordered one of the homemedics from bed bath and beyond. Was about $20 and has all of the things you mentioned.

My DS2 did this with my inlaws central vac system or our vaccum cleaner. We had a white noise maker on the Baby swing which we kept next to his crib in our room. But it never seemed to work as well as the vacuum. I never got around to getting something like a vacuum cleaner, but I had found some downloads online that you could burn to a CD, then play it on your CD player. I just googled white noise for babies and found tons of stuff. GOOD LUCK!
