5mo sleeping on tummy

Thread Starter
sometimes at night when our 5 month old is in our bed, he wakes up in the middle of the night and would rather play than go to sleep, so i put him in his crib and he plays and eventually falls asleep on his own - but i'm afraid he's going to fall asleep on his tummy (as he does sometimes during the day when he naps) and i'm not going to be awake to roll him back over.

he's rolled from his tummy to back, and back to tummy, since he was three months, and is almost crawling - so he can easily move around. my question is, is this safe, or should i roll him back over onto his back? every time i do he usually wakes up. i want my sleep, but i want him to be safe, and i don't want to be worried about him all the time.

I think once they can roll onto their tummy it's okay.

I let my 3 mo son sleep on his tummy all the time. He has great head control and can lift his head and chest off the bed and hold it up for several minutes.

I believe the general advice is once your baby can roll from tummy to back, then it's safe to tummy sleep. By that point he's physically strong enough to 'rescue' himself by rolling.
