I just got diagnosed with this and was wondering if anyone else has it. If so, how do you manage it? Anything I should be aware of? Thanks!

tons of us have thyroid issues on H&H. I would check out the thyroid thread for sure. Also the adrenal fatigue thread because usually thyroid and adrenal issues go hand and hand. What test did you have done? What were your numbers?

Jumping in b/c I just found out today that my thyroid is under-active. My doctor wrote me a prescription for Synthroid but I haven't filled it yet - I"m too freaked out! I have never had anything wrong with me, like ever and I don't know how to handle this! I have been feeling tired, but I thought that was just life with a new baby, so I didn't think anything of it. I am not having any other symptoms at all, I have a fair amount of energy and haven't gained any weight. In fact, I got back to pre-pregnancy weight easily and I have been excercising to get my fitness back.

So I'd like to know what this means for me and my future. What can I expect from the medication? What else can I do to help manage this? Are there other remedies for an under-active thyroid?

The test my doctor ran was the TSH, 3rd generation, and the result was 12.5 or something like that, if that helps.

I personally wouldn't take synthroid. I would take armour or naturthroid but you must know that most conventional doctors don't know how to treat thyroid. You also need to have your antibodies checked, T3 and T4. TSH is not really a good indicator of anything. Have you checked the thyroid thread? There's so much that goes in to treating your thyroid. I have hashis which conventional docs don't check for. I had to go to a ND to get the correct test done

Interesting. My doc did all those tests (total thyroid screen) but the only thing out of whack was TSH.

Can someone link the thyroid thread for me please? I can't find it, unless it's in a different forum. Thanks!

This is my Cliff's Notes to thyroid stuff: ...

Also, read Bruce Rind's article in the latest Wise Traditions called Low Metabolic Therapies Addressing Thyroid and Adrenal Insufficiency. Dr. Rind discusses the importance of treating the adrenals *BEFORE* trying to heal the thyroid since trying to fix the thyroid will result in further weakening the adrenals.

Dr. Dommisse articles and interviews at About.com:Thyroid

There were some really informative articles about iodine in the latest Wise Traditions. Read Best Kept Secret.

And, The Great Iodine Debate by Sally Fallon Morell - 15 pages about iodine!

THE Iodine Thread

THE Adrenal Fatigue Thread

The Thyroid Thread (Part II)

My story, my cure...

Start at the back of those long threads, then read the first page or so.

I had all the symptoms of an underactive thyroid but whatever number my GP and OB measured say no. I eventually got a referral to a endocrinologist. I'm on Synthroid and it works well for me. I did well on generic synthroid as well and will have her switch me back since it is so inexpensive. This really depends on how your body processes things.

Another really important thing I didn't pick up on at first is to avoid calcium rich foods supplements within 4 hours of taking the synthroid. It messes with absorption.

Taking synthetic thyroid has made a huge huge difference in my health.

Never mind, it's on the front page now!

I've been on Synthroid for 15 years. I am hesitant to even read anything negative about it because I was put on it when I was 19, and I know it works for me because I know how bad I get when I go off it. For those of you who are going to judge me for being on it, I don't feel like I'm at a place in my life where switching to something I've never tried is really worth risking the depression that could ensue when my thyroid gets out of whack again.

I don't think anyone will judge you for it. Some of us have just had a different experience with Synthroid than you have. If it works for you, that's great! I think everyone would agree that it's always preferable not to have to be dependent on medication though if that's a possibility.

I'd say the worst thing is just that it doesn't do a great job fixing symptoms for a lot of people, so if it works for you, you're set. There's quite a bit of frustration, in general, about Synthroid because many docs ONLY use it and basically tell people they're SOL if they've still got symptoms.

If you ever wanted to take a different approach, there are different, non-medication approaches to hypothyroidism, lots of nutrients that can be out of whack (fixing them allowed my thyroid to make enough hormone) and that lacking those nutrients also made me depressed, but if you've got something that works and you're satisfied, stick with it.
