Do you give your dtr. vit D/calcium supplements?

Just curious. This was suggested for my preteen dd, and I haven't gotten a clear idea of the pros/cons for her yet. Thx.

I recommend you pop over to the health and healing forum and do a search on vitamin D, there are many, many posts on the subject. Many, many people are vit D deficient, so it isn't just an issue for preteens/teens.

Thanks-I just posted there!

No. She drinks a huge amount of milk and walks to school and back (about 2 miles total) everyday. I'm not concerned because I think she gets enough from diet and sun exposure. If she had a poor calcium intake or wasn't getting any sun at all (e.g. if we were in the Arctic), I'd be more concerned.

Everyone in the family is encouraged to take vitamin D. I take it. DS2 takes it. DD2 takes it. DD1 doesn't like the pills, so we're working on that. DH and ds1 are on their own on this one. I've pointed out that we live in an area where the days are short in the winter, and that we have a lot of cloudy, overcast, rainy days, so there's not a lot of sunlight here. I think it's a good idea to take vitamin D, because of the geography.

I'm the only one who takes calcium. I don't think I get enough from my diet. I'm not worried about that for any of the rest of the family, though.

I just found Vit D gummis, the Rainbow Lite brand, so now everyone in the family is doing a Vit D supplement.

Yes, but she has osteoporosis.

The Vitamin D is so important. Since my 12 y.o. daughter and I started taking it we never get sick anymore--I haven't had a cold in over 2 years (I used to have one after the other all winter long) and she gets sick maybe once per year--it used to be constant--she used to miss so much school for colds/flu/sore throat.

Not sure about the calcium. I've heard that the calcium in milk is poorly absorbed and it's better to get it from leafy greens. We drink milk, too, though...

I'm now looking for a decent calcium/D supplement. Viactiv is just plain awful tasting for dd. Her diet is somewhat inconsistent at this point, although we tend toward whole foods, even some TF. Does anyone use a supplement that they can speak to?
