What to knit a 17 y/old new mama?

My dh's 17 y/old cousin is having a baby girl in March and I have no idea what to knit her. I was thinking a pair of mary jane booties and a shrug for spring/summer? Thinking 3-6 month sizing? But then I was figuring that would be right in the middle of the summer and might not be used much.

Any ideas?

Btw-The reason I add in the mamas age is b/c Im at a loss of what a 17 y/old would want her baby in...the mama is really "young" into clothes ect.

I would make a baby hat or booties in newborn size for immediate use, then make a cute dress in size 6-9 months that could be worn alone near the end of summer, or over a shirt and tights come autumn. I can't wait to have a girl so that I can make this one!

if she is going to be using cd a cute diaper cover that can be worn under a summer dress (this might be a way to open the door if she is thinking sposies)

a small blanket to use as a carseat blanket
a larger blanket to use as a sun block out for stroller or to go over the unused carseat to protect it from the heat.

a little toy or log pillow made with red/black/white colors

a beenie style hat (and matching booties)

Dreamy-
I am in love with that Kaia dress- I think I am going to try to size it up for my 4yo! It is just darling!

Someone gave my son a baby gift of a tiny knitted baby blanket. It's the perfect size for the car seat and bouncy seat, so I don't have to fold a larger, traditional sized baby blanket to cover his chest and legs. I also use it at night on him (he dislikes the sleep sacks). It's so small, I don't worry about him getting wrapped up in it, yet it just covers his body (I leave his arms out).

I wish I had more of these little blankets, they have so many uses.

It's in the laundry as I speak, but when it is dry, I will post the measurements (about the size of a large prefold diaper I believe).
It was the greatest little gift, wish I had more.

ETA (I just saw Littlemizflava's suggestion of the car seat blanket!)

A friend gave me a crocheted baby blanket, and it's the only blanket I'd use in Eric's crib (he also hated sleep sacks) - he never got it over his head, but I didn't worry too much that he would, because knit/crochet items have such an open weave to allow air in!

When I had my first and was really shy with breastfeeding since I'd never done it before and no one else I knew ever did it, I LOVED my poncho. It was a lacy cotton thing, small enough to just cover my chest and baby's head. It was a dark blue colour so I could see through the holes to see what my Dd was doing but no one else could see.

When I wasn't using it as a poncho, it became a blankie, a changing pad and a spit up wipe. I loved it so much I bought a dark pink one too.

Those dresses are adorable! Im positive shes not cd and im not sure shes bf either . Sadly im sure she's not very "crunchy" She's a very typical 17 y/old. Im thinking a dress is prob the way to go. Im pretty sure shoes would go over well too.
