Aldi's Meats- Yay or Nay

Hey!

I love Aldi's for so many things but am skeptical about the meat. What meats do you buy?

I bought some Salmon pinwheels, chicken tenders and steak ums. I have had the steak-ums before and as far as cheap, easy sandwhiches I don't mind them. What about their fresh meat?

I buy most of my breakfast foods, dry cereal, waffles and hash browns from them. I love to cook from scratch but for breakfast I am all about easy peasy.

I've bought their chicken before. It's okay. Around here, it's Tyson, which isn't my favorite, but it'll do. No different than Tyson at another store, you know?

I also used to buy their frozen shrimp. I started having some weird itchiness on my hands after eating shrimp that went away when I stopped eating farm raised shrimp, so I don't buy it anymore. But, it was always fine.

I sometimes buy their frozen fish.

I skip their meat. We did pork chops once, and they were low quality and had a weird taste I can't describe. The $2 filet mignons were ok, but we decided not to buy them again.

We did like their cereal and dried fruit.

The biggest reason for us to go to Aldi's is to save money. In our experience the meat there is just not saving money. There are a couple local stores we watch to have sales on meat than buy at those stores. There are also a couple local meat markets that we have seen ads for, but they are places to buy in bulk and our freezer is just too small for that. If we can get a small chest freezer picked up over the summer the meat markets are really the best deal in the area. I do know those can be more difficult to find in many places, but we have been lucky to find them where we have lived.

I sometimes buy their preportioned salmon for convenience (it's already in 4 oz serving sizes) but it's expensive. We mostly buy our meat directly from a man that raises animals for butchering.

I watch our fruit markets (butchers) for sales and big grocers for sales. I actually have a list of things I will call 4 different places that are local and say
How much is your _______ this week. I fill out my chart and see where to go.

We have a deep freeze so when chicken quarters are 29 cents a lb, chicken breasts are 1.69 a lb, etc ... we try and do that.

If you have the space or room - a deep freeze saves so much money in the long run. Even if you kept it in your garage.

Pork, ok, chix, ok, hamburger, ok. Steaks, tough and little flavor. Frozen stuff I've never had a problem with.

The meat is not cheaper than other places so I never buy it. DH swears the lunch meats are death in a package from his teen years but I've never found out for myself.
