Why not buttons?

Thread Starter
My MIL made fleece covers for my baby before she was born. She used different patterns and some are getting small, so I am thinking about more. I love the fleece, very happy with it, but kinda want to try something different than aplix this time. I would love snaps, but don't want the investment of the press, so why not buttons? I have tons of extra ones. Would button holes even need to be sewn in the fleece, since it does not fray?

What would be the cons of using buttons compared to snaps?

Well the only con I can think of is that buttons can be pulled off easier and then become a choking hazard. However, I like your idea and I think I am going to try it out. Of course it wouldn't be as adjustable as Velcro but the Velcro can leave wicked marks on a walking toddler! I think I will put the buttons where the hook part of Velcro would be (less tempting for baby to pick at) and the holes (more for adjustably) on the loop area. I also am going to add an extra piece of fabric along the back of the loop area to prevent wicking through the button holes.

Thanks for the idea and I will let ya know how it goes!

As far as button holes in the fleece... You could get away with not actually sewing button holes for a little baby but for a crawling/walking baby sewing them may be a good idea. Just to reinforce because extra stress that will be put on them.

I've put buttons on wrap covers and something to keep in mind is that you'll need several buttons to get the proper fit. I made the mistake of only putting on one row and I couldn't get a good enough fit with that. You will also have a high amount of stress if there's any stretch in your fabric, and you're risking pulling the buttons right off. And if baby is of an age to play with them, that's another risk. You may be better off with installing a hook and eye system, similar to the back of a bra.

Oooh, now there's an idea. Seriously, why didn't I think of trying that before?? I'm going to now. Thanks!

And I assume it's not done because of the choking hazard and maybe because they might not hold up super well? Just sew on the buttons tight and I'm sure it would be fine.

Instead of a press, look into a snap pliers. KAM snaps sells a pliers with 200 snaps for $36(with free shipping) not a bad deal at all

Have you personally tried these? I have heard from numerous amounts of people that snap pliers just don't work well at all.

Well, I have my snap pliers coming in the next few days. I haven't heard anything bad about them, other than that they are for small time snapping, like personal use, a snap press is better for a lot of snap applying. These aren't the metal snap type pliers, these are ones made for the plastic snaps.

I absolutely love my snap pliers.
I don't even bother sewing buttons back on clothes now. I just put a snap beside where the old button used to be
