Talk to me about newborn cloth :)

Having my 3rd and I normally don't cloth at birth, I use up all the sposies I get given first lol. Anyways, since I don't have a newborn cloth history I want to get advice. I usually have 5 or 6lb little skinny peanuts. I would love an OS diaper but I understand they aren't good for newborns?? Lead me oh wise ones in the cloth diaper realm!!

I think your best bet for a newborn, especially a small one, would be newborn prefolds and covers. Especially since you will use a lot of them every day! 24-36 prefolds and 6-9 covers should get you through the first few months.

prefolds+snappi+ wool cover went very smoothly for us. very cost effective!

i agree. prefolds, snappi and a good cover. bummis super brite is a really good choice and worth the little extra money. then you need infant wash cloths like gerber for wipes. cloth is way better than disposeables, especially for newborns.

I couldn't figure out prefolds at first, but my little guy has never been in a sposie. I got small fitteds, and when those wound up being too big for my skinny little guy, got some NB fitteds, and was quite happy with them.

Of the ones I had, the only ones I know are still available are the Loveybums, and they fit during the NB period very nicely, although I also had several WAHM NB fitteds that I loved (all bought used). We just did those and wool (I had 1 preemie sized PUL cover - he's still too skinny for NB size). In fact, at 4 months the NB fitteds would probably still fit him except for his long rise.

I started my fat little 8 lber out in Thirsties covers and preemie prefolds (thought I would have another teeny baby, but he was alot bigger than his sisters!). Worked great, although he was pee'ing through his pf's by a week or so, but it was easy to fix; I just doubled them!

With a newborn, I can only deal with fitteds. Prefolds are too complicated when I'm in a post-birth haze, especially at night. And AIO's leak. I loved Kissaluvs 0 on both my babies and would be interested to try the infant fitteds from Green Mountain Diapers if I ever have another.

Add me to the prefold bandwagon. I had three super skinny, long babies. Prefolds were the only things I could use that fit. So, my suggestion would be prefolds, pins (I didn't do Snappis with my newborns) and a cover. I really like the new Thirsties duo-wraps or the Imse Vimse covers for newborns.

On both babies I used small pf's, if they were a little big I just folded down the back and ALWAYS ALWAYS.... ALWAYS jelly roll the legs in, lol. That way all the poo stays in. With my newest I also used BabyKicks Organic Fitted on the newborn setting with a snappi and no cover, he was 7lbs and it fit great w/ no leaks

We did mostly fitteds and small pockets, but my son was 9.7 at birth so he was a big one!

There are fitteds that fit tiny babies.. I liked nanipoos for my kiddos.

With 5-6 lb. babies, I would also get some preemie pf and smaller covers. Bummis Super Brites should fit 4-9 lbs, or Proraps preemie. Mine have all been early/tiny and we ended up having to use disposable preemie dipes a couple of times ($$$$) because of not being prepared with preemie sizes. We are TTC #4, and I'm already planning diapers . I plan to have preemie and nb size prefolds and covers. Mine have tended to grow pretty quickly, but I'm sure we could have used preemie pf's for over a month.

If you want to use OS diapers, (which I haven't; have always done prefolds), they will probably begin to fit (they'll be bulky, but I don't mind bulk. It's cloth!) around the time the NB prefolds are outgrown. That would be the most economical way to go about it if you don't want to continue to use pf's.
