natural deodorant that works?

Thread Starter
anyone found a natural deodorant that works? I've tried almost everything I can find and am starting to think it's me .

My MIL recently had breast cancer and I just want to do right by my body, which means not putting harmful chemicals on my skin...the only thing that seems to work is stuff with the aluminum in it, but I'm sure it's not healthy to absorb that, especially right next to your lymph-nodes...

am I just going to have to stink? or is there something out there that actually works?

I've been using a mineral rock and it seems to work pretty well. I got mine from Sprouts but I think you can find them in any health food place.

I make my own with a recipe I saw on a MDC mama's blog. It's the best!!
1 part baking soda
1 part coconut oil
1 part shea butter

I melt the shea butter and coconut oil in the microwave and then mix in the baking soda. You don't need to use very much at all and it's very effective.

You can add essential oils but I haven't. It dries clear and doesn't leave white marks. I love it!!

I have read that during the transition from anti-perspirant to natural you should scrub your underarms to unblock pores. There is definitely a period of stink in the beginning after you switch to natural but it goes away.

Lately, I've been using a mineral rock as well and I love it. For me, the key is to make sure either the rock itself or my pits are quite damp before I apply. If they're not damp enough then not enough of the mineral salts are able to be transferred to the skin. So, I get out of the shower and don't dry my pits and I immediately use the rock. I also swipe, swipe, swipe it across my pits multiple times.

This has worked wonders for me - wet pits and running the rock over the skin multiple times to make sure it's all covered ensures I'm stink free for at least 24 hours. But, if my pits aren't damp enough or if I don't swipe enough, I'm super stinky.

I use (and LOVE) the Weleda deodorant. It comes in Citrus, Rose (my fav) and Sage. It's a spray on, and it comes in this pretty glass bottle-- it really looks more like perfume. It's not too expensive and a bottle lasts me about 3 months I think. I carry one around in my purse and re-apply as needed during the day.

I think the key with using natural deodorants is APPLY OFTEN!

I've also tried and really like the Dr. Hauschka floral deodorant. It's out of my budget these days, though.

I have tried them all, and I have found that baking soda works the best. I just pat some into my underarms and it works great as a deodorant and anti-perspirant, except for those humid, Florida summer days...

Thanks for sharing that recipe Mayfly, I'll probably try some of that. The Weleda stuff is nice, but not strong enough for me!

I use baking soda and coconut oil. I take 1/2 tsp of coconut oil, sprinkle some baking soda on it, then rub until the oil starts to "melt" and the bs mixes in so that I can rub it under my arms. I've also mixed up a bunch in a small lidded container and used as needed. Of all the natural deodorants I have tried this has worked the best. I don't even need to apply it every day.

I'm a marathon-running stinky fool and I've sworn by Funk Butter for years now - I wouldn't have it any other way I buy it in bulk and pass it out here and I swear I've gotten at least 10 people hooked.... Love it!

This is really interesting I know baking soda is known for killing odors. As was posted before it is in quiet a few ingredients.

currently I alternate between Tom's unscented and baking soda (for days I am not going anywhere). I used to prefer Kiss my Face, but after awhile I felt like it didn't work so well, and so I switched. I do think that it takes a bit for your body to get used to something more natural. You might stink/sweat for several weeks more than usual, but this should regulate.

I will not use commercial deodorants, and it seems the more natural ones make me break out. I have sprinkled plain baking soda on days I use nothing, and feel like I need something...

I just tried making deodorant with 1/2 c baking soda, 1/2 c corn starch and 3 tbsp melted coconut oil. I also added a couple dashes of bitter almond eo. It's kind of like homemade icing consistency.

I don't know if it works or not, yet. But I will let you know.
Good luck finding what works for you!

The recipe I use is 1/4c. baking soda, 1/4c. cornstarch, 5Tbsp coconut, 2 vitamin E capsules (punctured). Melt coconut oil and add in rest of ingredients. Pour into and empty deodorant bottle or a small jar and let harden in fridge. My dh uses this stuff and he says it works great (and he is a tough critic).

I am currently exploring this topic as well. I came across this info about the crystal the other day http://bubbleandbee.blogspot.com/200...eodorants.html

I thought it was kind of interesting and some of the comments on the blog were enlightening as well...I like getting as much info as possible.

Thanks to PP's for the homemade recipes! I'll be trying these out...

PS I was just searching this forum for posts on a different topic and noticed there are a bunch of older threads (with lots of posts) about deodorant alternatives. I'm sure you'll find even more helpful info from previous threads. Good luck!

I just use baking soda with a little cornstarch mixed in. You can use plain baking soda but I have sensitive skin and find straight baking soda uncomfortable and a little gritty. I don't know if it matters in your case but this is only a deodorant, it won't prevent sweating.

In the last year I have purchased every natural deoderent I could get my hand on. There is an old thread somewhere - probably a few. I have a huge drawr full of old deoderent (most of it did not work, but cost a lot of $)!

My conclusion: Funk butter and Weleda Wild Rose. I use funk butter primarily, but keep a bottle of wild rose in case I need to freshin-up at work (not very often, but it does happen).

we use the soap/shampoo that the funk butter folks make too, for DS, and I like their chapstick (geez, sounds like I work there or something - I don't).

This is the best for me, too. I do equal parts coconut oil, baking soda, and aloe vera gel. Some people get rashes from the baking soda, so you can try toning that down. Coconut oil alone works a little for me, but not as superbly as the mix. You can add EOs to it too, or cornstarch to thicken. There are lots of recipes for it out there. Funk butter works well but it is basically some combo of this recipe.

I have also had luck with the crystals and the weleda spray. Nothing else I tried on the shelves worked one bit!
