He struggles with taking the liquid amoxicillin that was prescribed and would be easier if it was in chewable but the only chewable form the pharmacist has is too high of a dosage for him .

So I'm wondering what to do because he's screaming get away from me and he's going to miss his 2nd dose today because he don't want to take it .

Then he cries and kicks . Telling me to leave him alone .

The only chewable at the walmart is 850 mg when he has to take 8 ml from a 400 mg bottle at least 2x for 10 days.

I have better luck with my kids taking medicine if I give them the cup/spoon/syringe and let them do it themselves. This even works with my toddler.

Also, having an incentive is helpful--phrasing it like, "let's quickly drink your medicine so we can read a story!" or "I know you don't care for the taste, so I made you a delicious smoothie to wash it down with when you're done."

I hope your little guy is feeling better soon!

My son fought me tooth and nail over taking his liquid antibiotics...I tried everything, then just put it in some really sweet juice (couple ounces) and gave him a straw to sip it up with. That was the only thing that worked. The rx he usually got was biaxin suspension, which is really grainy and didn't disolve in liquid, and usually settled to the bottom of the cup of juice, so that's where the straw came in handy. Good luck!

OMG My kiddos too!! My 6 yo just LOVES "shooting" it into his mouth with the medicine syringe. I think it's because HE feels in control, and plus, it's fun!
I also found that sort of holding him close on your lap and quickly shooting it into the corner of his cheek helps too!! It HAS to be done! that's the bother.

Some pharmacies have "shots" of flavor to make meds taste more appealing to children. My son likes marshmallow and raspberry. Ask your pharmacy..oh and most of them will give you a syringe for free too.

DS has always been this way with meds. He's 8 now, and this past fall he had to take meds for an infected tick bite on his leg. What we always end up doing is, I get the syringe ready, and he gets a cup of applesauce or pudding or yogurt or whatever is quick and easy to swallow. I squirt a bit, he takes a quick bite and swallows. Rinse, repeat until the meds are done. As time goes on, the squirts get bigger until we're down to like, two per dose, and then he walks away happily eating his applesauce or whatever.

I also used to mix it in with yogurt or applesauce or whatever, but DH was quick to catch that so it didn't last long most times. I even managed to get it mixed into jelly for a PB&J once.
