I'm guessing it depends on your body and the baby's size. My last baby was transverse up until the last days before birth, and still changing from side to side. ETA: He was born vaginally and not posterior, so got into the right position during the birth itself.
This baby has dropped, I'm pretty sure (has had his head low in my pelvis for weeks), but still changes sides regularly as well (and is sometimes posterior). In other words, he's able to still rotate around on his head (though he's not made any attempts to bring his head out of my pelvis).
I seem to have plenty of room for him still at 37 weeks...
