does thumbsucking mean he's hungry?

babe is 4.5 mo, EBF. he's average height, and low end weight. i nurse him a lot. seriously.

past week or so he has taken up thumbsucking. it is *darn* cute. my daughter never really did that. although she did get a pacifier, when she was this age, i was working and she was in the care of my mom for most of the day. she got a paci and a bottle when i was gone.

new baby hasn't had any artificial nipples.

is thumbsucking probably just fulfilling a "need" for more sucking, or should i be nursing him even more?

for example, right now, he's asleep with his thumb in his mouth, and his sucking going full on. he fell asleep around 6 pm, it's closing in on 10 pm, and i expect him to be waking up soon for his usual late night feed. overnight he sleeps with me and we nurse off and on all night, on demand/cue.

i don't think i should purposely wake him up right now, in order to nurse just because i see his thumb in his mouth; on the other hand, he will be nursed as soon as he wakes up and cues me that he's hungry. in the meantime, is he just dreaming about nursing, and hence the thumbsucking?

am i worrying/overthinking this way too much, and i should just go back to thinking it's cute?

I vote for this ^

He may be hungry, he may want to suck, he may be teething, he may be any number of things. So long as he's still cueing you to feed him, I wouldn't worry about it. It's not going to fill his tummy.

hi there,
Iva sucks her thumb, first and second fingers. She alternates between those favorites. She sucks during the day and sometimes at night. My guess is that your baby is sucking to suck and will wake up more if he wants milk. It is super cute!

I vote go back to thinking it's cute too. He's probably just comfort sucking and will let you know when he's hungry. My son did it for like a month or so then suddenly stopped. I miss it, it was very adorable! Though being that my mom and husband both sucked their thumbs until they were 7 it's probably for the best he quit early haha.

I agree with the PPs. DD is a big thumb sucker, and she definitely lets me know when she actually wants to eat.
