ok so we are ready to ttc and blend our two families. i have a 3.5 daughter and 2.5 son dp has 7yo son and 8yo son. im so excited that its time for us to ttc i dont think i can wait the almost 4 weeks to get into my midwife's to remove my mirena. is it safe to remove it ourselves? i ovulate tomorrow. i have had my period pretty much perfectly the whole time i've had mirena. and the next time i ovulate is like feb 20 or 21. i know that if i take it out today it is not that likely that we will get pregnant this time. but omg im soooo ready!

It's my understanding that the hormones in the Mirena suppress ovulation. I would be willing to bet that even though you've been getting AF this whole time on schedule, you haven't been ovulating. I also have the mirena and have a perfect 28 day cycle. I don't think you should be in a huge rush b/c you think you should be O'ing tmw...
I wouldn't risk taking it out yourself. Though it might just come out, you do run the chance of tearing tissues and or hurting your self some other way. I know you are super excited to ttc, but I would just wait until the appt.

I was going to come back after doing some reading because I'm also pretty sure it suppresses ovulation.

and after getting it out... you are likely going to have some really messed up cycles for a while, due to the hormones leaving your body.
Some women do get lucky enough to get pregnant right away... but some just have issues until the hormones clear out of their bodies.
and do NOT remove it yourself! the damage you could end up doing may result in you never being able to have children again, let your midwife do it... she knows what she is doing.

I removed my IUD myself with no problems.
Years ago, I had a paraguard (copper) and it had started causing me HUGE problems and we were ready to ttc #2. I called my CNM who put it in to make an appointment to have it taken out and she actually suggested I could just do it myself if I wanted to. She gave me instructions and told me what NOT to do. (as in, if it was hard to do, DON'T keep trying).
It was scary easy- out in about one minute- and I had no problems at all. I made it into a piece of art
Cursed thing.
That said, I wouldn't have done it without my MW's blessing and instructions and I don't want to give you detailed instructions, because you ought to check in with your caregiver, but I just wanted to let you know I've personally done it and had no problems.
Agree, tho, with what pps have said about the hormones probably hanging around for a while, so this probably isn't your cycle. Much luck when it is, though!

I also took mine out myself with no complications. It was way easier than I thought it was going to be. If it didn't come out easily with just a bit of tension, I would have stopped and let a professional do it. With the mirena it probably will take a while to start ovulating and having regular cycles. Good luck!

If it wasn't suppressing ovulation wouldn't that make it a useless form of birth control then? Maybe there was a fluke month but I would def not rush to remove it yourself just because you think you are Oing (and also if you are just dividing your 28 day cycle in half, even if you were Oing it isn't necessarily on cd14 for all women) You could really only confirm O by temping/charting. I would call your HCP or midwife and like a PP said, see if she could give you detailed instruction to remove it if possible (if it looked like it was gonna be a while before you could have it professionally removed). Good luck!

Anyway, with Mirena you aren't supposed to ovulate, but stranger things have happened.

I had an IUD that I had huge problems with..it came halfway out on its own. I was just about to call my ND (she put it in) when she just happened to call me and ask how I was doing. I told her the situation and she got me in right away, even though it was already coming out, she had trouble getting it to come the rest of the way out. It was painful and not a good experience. Complications can happen, make the best decision for yourself, being in a doctors office is a much safer option.
Good luck on your ttc journey.

I think I'd be too afraid of something going wrong to pull it out myself. My family doctor took mine out last week, and it just took a minute to do. Truthfully I'm not even sure i could have done it myself even if i had wanted it to. It was somewhat painful, sort of like a punch to the stomach. The discomfort faded pretty quickly though. However, I've never had any children, and I had pain getting it in, so maybe I'm particularly sensitive to stuff going on there.

i'll also chime in and say no. my mirena partially expelled one evening and i had to wait until THE NEXT DAY to get it out. oh god! so uncomfortable! i poked around to see if there was anything i could do, and no way could i have done it without medical help.
also i don't think mirena necessarily prevents ovulation. i think it works by inhibiting sperm from moving in the uterus, preventing sperm from going to the fallopian tubes, and making your lining extremely thin (which is why some women don't get their periods). i mean, it MIGHT prevent ovulation but i'm personally not sure if that's the case. i do know that it prevents pregnancy in a few different ways, though.
IUDs aren't very popular in the US due to ONE design flaw in ONE brand in the 70s or so, but they're very popular in other countries. and both the paragard and mirena are becoming more popular in the US these days!

Please do not try to remove it yourself. Just because some posters report success doesn't mean it's safe or a good idea.

I took mine out myself and had no problems from doing so- HOWEVER! (lol) I had just gotten an ultrasound done since I had been having severe pains from my Mirena and wanted to check and see if it was in place properly. They wouldn't remove it since they said it "wasn't the problem, the cyst is" so I did it myself, knowing it was in the right place and wouldn't cause bleeding or anything. It comes out quite easily and that's that. I wouldn't normally advise it, but if you are determined to and just want to make sure it's possible, then yes it is :)
