I know it's probably fine, but...

I really am wondering.

Is it normal and okay that my intact DS pees sideways? I never noticed before, but he wanted to learn to pee standing up "like the daddies do" , and he's having a lot of trouble not peeing all over the floor, because when he pees, the urine seems to come out at an angle. It's not always the same-- sometimes though it's as much as 90 degrees sideways from the angle of his penis.

I've never actually seen his glans, except once when his foreskin retracted a bit while he was messing with it, and I gently put it back for him. I didn't notice at that time if his urinary opening was in the right place.

But could it be that there's something wrong? Or is this normal? DH is no help. He's circed and pees straight and says he has no idea.

He's a few weeks away from turning 3.

i can't tell you for sure that your ds is fine but my 6 mo. old ds pees sideways too (we ec). i usually just hold him in a position that the pee ends up where it needs to go. he has peed straight up at times when his foreskin was so smooshed up against him w/o my realizing it. since it's not always the same, i wonder if you teach him to gently tug on his foreskin before he pees to straighten it some, if that might help.

This is normal. As the foreskin separates, some areas will release before others causing the urine to pass in a different direction. Also the foreskin can fold over to one side causing the urine to shoot out in a weird direction. Totally normal!

This is strictly a guess, but I'm thinking it's probably all okay and it's just an odd stream angle due to the starting of the separation process. I'm saying this since it doesn't come out at the 90 deg. angle every time. If you're still worried, you could ask your son to pull back ever so slightly to see if you can visualize the meatus (opening). Knowing how so many doctors just grab and retract, I'd personally feel more comfortable having my son retract so I could look than taking him to the doctor. But that's just me. And honestly, as long as he is voiding (peeing), he's okay.

When they hold their penises, they often pull the foreskin a bit off center causing it to shoot at odd angles. This is harmless but messy.

To help him improve his aim, get some floating breakfast cereal, and throw a small handful of them in the toilet before he pees. Have him try to sink the targets. Cheerios are the usually recommended kind, but we like the super markets own brand of fruit loop since they are more colorful and we never eat them.

I've never really had this problem that I can remember who knows about age three, well there are those who know but I am not asking. Anyway I think it will improve with age as it fully separates. He could certainly use the urinals when you're out in public since it's much more forgiving then the far away bowl. So when you're out he can 'pee with daddy' at the urinals and when at home perhaps just sit for now.

Potty Scotty sells a little urinal you can hang on the side of the toilet.
