Need some encouragement/advice

My 16 month old dd has been going through a strange stage of late. She request nursing (verbal or with sign language) multiple times a day but when I go to feed her she eats for maybe 5 minutes then spends the rest of the time either biting me or just wanting to lay with my breast next to her face while she plays. This is making my milk supply really go down, and to be honest I really just don't like sitting around with my breast hanging out. If I try to finish the session she throws a fit until I bring it back out, she nurses for about 5 more minutes and then back to either playing or biting. This goes on for about 30 to 40 minutes at a time and started about 3 weeks ago. She really has me confused. Any advice or explanation?

I don't have any advice per se, but I understand this is pretty typical. My DD is almost 16 months and does the same thing. She does most of her actual nursing right before bed and in the middle of the night. I work outside the home, so my pumping sessions during the work week keep my supply regulated. I also pump once each weekend morning. My DD takes 15 oz a day from bottles, which is the same amount I pump. So, I assume that those little sucks here and there are actually adding up to a substantial amount over an entire day. On the weekends, she asks for milk pretty much anytime it looks like I am in the middle of doing something else. She likes to lie in my lap, latched on but not really nursing, and play with a toy, too. Remember that nursing is not all about nutrition. That being said, it is easy to become a bit touched out with this behavior. Hang in there!
