Should you approach a jeweller or is there somewhere else where it can be sold? I have a broken 24 karat gold bracelet and a big car repair bill.

I see ads on TV in my area advertising places buy jewelery. I would probably call some local jewelers and ask. If they don't buy gold, they probably know places that do. Selling it locally is going to be a better idea that doing one of those mail gold seller programs.

Hit the local jewelry stores and ask. Show them what you have and get an amount. See who will pay the most. We have one jewelry store that has a sign out front that they buy gold. Yesterday in the mall someone even had a kiosk set up for buying gold.

I went and had a bit of gold--some broken 18k chains. They only wanted to give me "five thirty two". I asked "$532.00?" and the person rolled her eyes and said, "no, $5.32". Needless to say, I took my stuff back. So, I have no idea how much I'd need to get a decent amount.

I see you are in NS. There are ads on TV all the time right now that Money Mart is buying gold, and they claim to have the best rates in Canada. No idea if that is true or not though.
