How long does it take to see an improvement? How long do you try one thing (like a cream) before deciding if it helps or not? How long do you have to eliminate something (like a detergent etc) before figuring out if that's the cause or not?
DS2 (6.5 mos) was dx'ed with eczema the other day. It's only on his cheeks and on his lower ab area- between his belly button and penis. Basically, right where his urine would touch his skin. His bum is completely smooth and rash free, as are his leg creases.
So I've been trying a certain cream (from the hfs with calendula in it- it helps his cheeks as long as I use it frequently), and have been using cotton flat (rinsed about 4 times- so no detergent on them) diapers under cotton pants (I was desperate!). So far, the rash does NOT get worse with the cotton flat/pants combo, but doesn't really go away. (It did go away once with that combo, but came back and hasn't gone away since- 3-4 days perhaps).
It DOES get worse when we use sposies (even though he's never reacted to them before) and when I use a pul cover. I'm not sure if it has to do with the diaper, or that we don't know immediately when he pees with those.
He did recently start solids, a week or 2 before the rash started. He also had a rash that looked the same well before he started solids. I'm going to eliminate dairy from my diet, and cut him back to one solid food for now.
With a dairy elimination diet for me, does that include even tiny amounts of dairy? I assume it would for him, just not sure if my eating tiny amounts (like if dairy were the last ingredient in a list) would get to him or not.
So my main question is- IF having him in cotton flats and changing immediately is going to help, or if the cream is helping, how long would it take for the rash to go away or get better?
Is it safe to assume that if you try something new (cream, new diaper system) and the rash is worse in a few hours, that's what made it worse?
