Just pulled my son from school..

and will now be homeschooling through a local charter school. My son is 6 almost 7 and in 1st grade. He has loved school until recently. He has a "personality conflict" with his teacher to put it mildly. She yells at him, is overly harsh in discipline, etc. We requested a teacher change and they are unwilling to do it, so we are enrolling him in the charter school and he will be "truant" (according to the public school) u8ntil he is enrolled. This situation sucks, but I have to protect my son.

With that said, I never thought I'd be a homeschooler. In theory, I loved the idea, In practice, I was nevr sure I could do it, and now, here I am! I'm sure I'll be around for support and lots of questions!

Hi and welcome I see you're in Ca. (us too). What did you tell the school when you pulled him out? Did you tell them he was going to be homeschooled?

Here is a great resource that someone here shared with me. It is invaluable.

HSC, the HomeSchool Assn. of California - that's exactly the link I was about to post! You can also join their huge email group - look for that link over in the left hand column of their site.

I wouldn't take the risk of having him truant - it's easy enough to establish your own private school until such time as he's enrolled in a charter school - you can read about that in the "Legal 101" section of that site (again, look over in the left hand column of their site). For that matter, it might be better not to eveb enroll him in a program yet, because he'll be needing some valuable decompression/deschooling time, and that can be difficult with the requirements a program might want to start right away.

And here's a lot more on "getting started." You may just find, as many of us did, that this is all a blessing in disguise - homeschooling can be such a wonderful way of life! Lillian

I, too, just took the step of pulling my children out of a bad situation. Welcome. You can do it.

ditto, just took my son out of kindergarten 2 weeks ago and are awaiting his enrollment in a charter school. You got some great advice already. I used to live in Corona! Best of luck. May you be pleasantly and overwhelmingly surprised.

Congratulations! I bet in a few months you'll be saying that you are glad his teacher was so bad and gave you a reason to pull him out and home school him. I was on the fence about homeschooling for a long time and then things started to go sour at my dd's school and I started homeschooling. I'm so glad her school made me so angry because that's what gave me the push I needed to take the plunge into homeschooling. I hope you love it as much as I do!
