Any leads for online botany and zoology classes?

My head is spinning after browsing through umpteen college websites the last few weeks trying to find botany and zoology courses. I need 6 credits of each to put towards my natural science teaching certification.

I did find a few zoology courses through Michigan but they also want $620 PER CREDIT. ugh. I am hoping there are other options.

Thank you!

Oh - a really great resource for textbooks that I found
You rent textbooks instead of buying them Awesome!!

Unfortunately, I don't know of any for the subjects you want. It strikes me that it might be hard to find much for those since sciences so often have some sort of lab component. The other problem with online is that unless you can find something in your own state, the credit hour cost is usually ridiculous. It's something I'm worried about when I'm trying to get continuing ed credits specifically for my subject after getting my certification--there's very little in my subject area in state, all of it two hours away, none of it online.

For your specific needs, you might want to check out the courses offered through the Bronx Zoo. Classes include marine biology, biology and conservation of predators, and conservation biology. They offer scholarships for most courses and all you have to pay is the fees to get credit through Adams State College in Colorado. The fees are usually between $190 and $220 for a class.
About the program: http://www.wcs.org/teachers/online-p...velopment.aspx Be sure to scroll down to "Teacher scholarship opportunity information".

Also check out the natural resources & fisheries and wildlife courses online through Oregon State University. Courses include ethnobotany, field methods in vegetation science, ichthyology, systematics of birds, ornithology, mammalogy, etc.
http://ecampus.oregonstate.edu/ specific course listings at http://ecampus.oregonstate.edu/soc/e...all&subject=FW

Also check out the courses at Santa Barbara Community College. The professor keeps a website at http://www.saturdays.net/. Animal Diversity, Ornithology, and Plant Diversity are offered almost every semester.

Oh, and check your local university extension program.

Woodland Community College has Principles of Animal Science and Principles of Plant Science online. I'm not sure what the out of state fees are these days (assuming you're not in California), but I think it's more in the $150/unit range.

Look at California community colleges in general. The per unit out-of-state cost is often comparable to other state's in-state cost.

I am checking out these links right now but cannot thank you all enough for this information!!

I have checked out Oregon State and the only drawback to them is that they are quarterly hours instead of semesters.

I have also found some plant pathology courses online through North Carolina State that would be meet botany requirements if anyone else is looking.

ETA: If anyone happens to be looking for science classes with an online lab, I had much luck with Rio Salado College (Maricopa County, AZ). Tuition was around $220 for out of state and the classes start almost every Monday and it is fully accredited and transferable.

I'm glad you found Rio Salado College. It is local to me and is part of the Maricopa County Community College District so as you said, it is fully accredited. Even though it is local to me, I took a few courses there that I needed to transfer to the local state university. I'd rather pay $200 for the course than $700.

Good luck to you!

Are you a resident of AZ? The website states $312 per credit hour for out of state students.

I am interested in taking additional classes for "fun", and the $200 price you mentioned caught me eye.

andrewsmother - If you look at the last line in the tuition box, it list $215 per credit hour for distance learners The $312 is for non-AZ residents taking classes in person.
