Non-reactive NST

OK, this is an old question, but I'm still wondering... Kinda long, sorry. (I think I need to rehash his whole birth story, for some reason.)

With my first, I had a midwife, but was transferred to the OB when I refused to prick myself daily for GD (I don't think I ever had it, every time I DID test I was well within the range of normal. I didn't want to prick often because it KILLED for days - in retrospect I think it was because they were putting the needle at adult depth and I have child-size fingers).

I kept refusing everything she wanted - no internals, no ultrasound "just for protocol," no screenings, etc. So when she decided she wanted me to take a NST every appointment, I figured what's the harm in finally saying yes to her. (Hindsight is 20/20, I also wasn't very informed about doppler exposure).

So my baby was NON-REACTIVE. Like every time. They'd poke me, "buzz" me, wait for a half hour, and baby would just sleep I guess. They could hardly get a reaction. (I knew he was OK, I'd feel him moving around plenty other times, but not during the NST.) Eventually they'd get one decel or whatever and let me go.

Of course, after a few of these, they sent me for 2 unnecessary ultrasounds, before the second of which they claimed "if baby looks OK we'll send you home" and then proceeded to put me into the maternity ward, hoping to induce me (without telling me ). I signed out AMA. (Yay uneducated me!)

Thank G-d baby was born before the due date, I'm sure they would have tried inducing me again...

Anyhow, why do you think I had nonreactive NSTs? What can cause them? Are they always a cause for worry? My baby was relatively big, almost 9lb (despite US 1.5 weeks before saying 7.5 lb), despite me starving myself trying to keep to their illogical GD diet. Could he just have not liked the doppler and tried to sleep through it? He's totally a calm personality now, but I've been wondering about it recently. Any ideas?

How long were you monitored for? Babies will look nonreactive if they are asleep. If you wait for baby to wake up, change position, have a snack, baby usually perks up.

I remember my babies all had very clear active and mellow times~ any NST done during their mellow times would absolutely appear NR. If done during active time the m/w /docs would be thrilled. Babies are so different and already have their own littl equirks and moods...
Did you find that your ds had more reactive and mellow times?
I've had NST in the past and have told the hcprovider at the time if I felt they were in a sleepy/mellow time or if they were active~ which was super clear by the react. strip.

I think NSTs sometimes do more harm than good, and anyhow if think there's a problem they always do an ultrasound. Because I have Lupus I have to have NSTs weekly now even though I'm only 33 weeks (because Lupus can cause blood clots to form in the placenta). It sucks.
