Have you ever thought about what that crystal is?
Answer: pure hydrated aluminium potassium
You're trying to avoid "harmful over the counter stuff" and you would give these suckers a chance? I certainly wouldn't trust them. The FDA has an permanent injunction against them.
Personally, I use "Mitchum Gel Anti-Perspirant & Deodorant,Unscented," and love it. It does have a high Aluminium content, but probably not as high as that crystal you were using while trying to avoid it.

My daughter is a junior in high school.
To this day when they talk about "Chris" from 5th grade.. someone inevitably says "B.O Chris? Or blue eyes Chris?". So, I think I'd give in, and let him have the over the counter deoderant for a while, at least on school days.
Otherwise, I do like the "funk Butter" from OYN. But, it's not super user friendly to the average fifth grader.

This is what we use for our kids:
http://www.jason-natural.com/products/deodorants.php
We use the tea tree oil one. It kills the bacteria that makes the smell. We found the others didnt work nearly as well.
Its the *only* thing that we found that actually worked. Even after trying the "regular" stuff at the drugstore.
Good Luck!

You could try mixing coconut oil and baking soda. That is what I use and it works really well. Coconut oil is anti-viral and anti-bacterial, and baking soda helps control odor. For extra anti-bacterial oomph you could add a few drops of tea tree oil and perhaps lavender or another scent that your son likes (patchouli or lemon for example).
I mix the oil (which is almost solid at room temp) and baking soda and keep it in a lidded container. To apply, I rub a small amount between my fingers until it starts to "melt", them rub under my arms.

My son had BO at that age too that was almost impossible to control. We did decide to use common deodorants and they didn't work much better than the natural ones. What did work for him was changing what he washed with. We went to baking soda in the shower and his BO disappeared. It was a fluke but it worked. We later added in Dr. Bronner's bar soap and it's OK too. I was suspcious at first about the sudden change but after he spent a long weekend with my parents using their soap and I could smell him in the car on the drive home I knew. Now he only uses Dr Bronner's or soda and he barely needs any deodorant!

I use Oyin funk butter. Bought it at oyinhandmade.com. It works great but the baking soda in it *can* irritate the skin so you have to be careful not to rub when apply. I just pat it on. Showering morning and night will help and wash his towel daily. Is he washing well? You could have him use a wash rag loaded with saop and really wash well with that under there.

I have an adolescent.
We have used body cream (whatever we like, scented or not) with baking soda mixed in, as much as you can and still have it be creamy. Scoop a bit out on the finger and massage into pits/etc. Works far better than anything else we tried, is very safe, and cheap. My daughter can now skip days and still smells fine.
My family will never buy deodorant again, because the baking soda/body cream works so well for us.
If your son had to have a store-bought one, I'd try arm and hammer.

I use JASON (tea tree kind) or Old Spice deodorant only as well.
I'm going to try the baking soda/cream thing.
I noticed that when I used to use antiperspirant with deodorant, I'd sweat like the dickens but wouldn't smell. When I used nothing at all, I'd stink but not sweat. Weird.
With deodorant only I smell just fine all day long (unless I use JASON - I have to use that twice a day to smell fresh) and sweat a normal human amount.
DH uses the Axe deodorant only, doesn't sweat much, and smells great even into the next day.
