Help me find a backpack!

I have a less serious problem than most on this forum - I need a new backpack!

My backpack is about a decade old. It is in surprisingly good shape, but it just isn't big enough to accommodate my insane amount of crap - giant books (2-3), three-ring binders, netbook, planner, notecards, personal things, lunch water bottle, coffee cup, and sometimes a breast pump (I have that crammed into a fairly small case by pump standards, but still, it's one more thing). The old pack is from before the time that laptop sleeves were common in backpacks, so to carry my netbook in the pack, I have to carry the whole case. So I need something to schlep all of this stuff, plus, it must be pink.

The old backpack is a North Face Yavapai. It has held up to a *lot* of abuse. I want something of that caliber, even if I have to spend around $100 (the old one was worth every penny). According to the website, the new version of the same model holds 1830 cubic in. of crap, so I am assuming the one I have is in that ballpark. My only regret with this pack is that I bought it the year before companies started making a pink version of everything.

The one I am leaning towards is this one. It holds 2015 cubic in.and has a laptop sleeve. It also appears that I could easily strap my lunch onto the front, making one less thing to put in the pack.

I have a few questions.

How do these laptop sleeves work? It seems like the delicate laptop would get crushed by all of the heavy books (the sleeve appears to be the the closest thing to the back of the backpack). Will not having to put the netbook case in the backpack save me a lot of room?

Does anyone else have a backpack that they love that is extremely durable?

, please!

I have a pretty new NF backpack with a laptop sleeve. On mine, it's a separate zipped pocket right at your back. I keep a netbook in it. The layer of fabric between the computer area and the rest of the area has five columns sewn into it. There is stuffing in the 2nd and 4th columns giving some stiffness, stability, and separation for the computer.

I have the Melinda. I bought it at The North Face store in Chicago and sat and looked and looked and tried on lots. I ended up with it for one big reason: it has none of that netting on it that always seems to tear. The bag I have does not come in pink (sorry) but I was after black to be able to get away with using it while wearing a suit.

I mostly like the bag I have. The two front pockets would be great for holding pencils and other long skinny things. I don't carry that much of that sort of thing. The bag does feel rather long and even with the straps cinched, it feels like it hits my rear more than I'd like sometimes. I'm very average in size, for whatever that's worth. My bag also has a weird pocket on the front and I still haven't discovered the intended use.

Overall I like the bag but I do know several people who have the Recon (older models) and they're very happy with their bags too.

I once had a Jansport backpack that I LOVED. This one looks comparable to the ones you are looking at http://www.jansport.com/js_product_d...?cid=&pid=TSS7. It was comfortable and durable. It was stolen and now I have an Infinity backpack that I love almost as much, but I can't find it on the web anywhere for you!

Here's the backpack I bought for school. http://http://www.buy.com/prod/syner.../10393071.html

I love it!! It has tons of pockets, and a separate uber padded pocket for my laptop, that also has storage in it for the charger. It has a pocket with wallet type compartments in it, and a hook for your keys. It also has lots of pockets in the different compartments for better organization, and in the main pocket there's a fold down, padded shelf thing to make it more structured. The 2 cup holders are really nice too, compared to the ones on some other backpacks I've had.

Don't know if this opens up your options, but I put my netbook into a neoprene sleeve ($10 at Target, mine's blue, but I think they've had pink) and add that into whatever bag I'm using, with the power supply in a side pocket. Most built-in backpack sleeves just seem way too big to me. That might give you more options in styles.

I just got this Levi's Metro 3 backpack at Marshall's for $12.99. List price is $100 so it was a smokin' deal, and I really like it. It holds my laptop plus there's room for lots of other stuff.

My current backpack is a North Face Mohawk, which I got ten years ago or so for really cheap... and it's still going strong and I love it, but it has no laptop compartment and it's too small to hold everything I need.

And I am, um, way too vain for a roller...
