Due in 5 days and DD is sick

She's never had a cold before in her life- she's gotten a stomach bug twice, but this is new. She's all snotty and congested, lots of gunk in her chest that she's making good work on coughing up. Poor kid is pretty miserable.

She still won't sleep, because she never does. I'm letting her nurse as much as she wants for as long as she wants, as much as it makes me want to tear my hair out, and loading her up on anything she'll eat that's high in vitamin C. Considering a pot of soup with lots of onions and garlic, but that might just make her gassy which would be the opposite of what she needs.

This is just so frustrating. If I have a baby soon then she'll be really miserable if she needs to go with Grandma, miserable if she stays at home because she wants to spend all her time clinging to me one way or the other, and she could make the new baby sick too. But I don't want to WAIT any more, the last thing I want is to send the baby confusing messages of "don't come out now" when all I've been saying the last two weeks is "hurry up already!"

My daughter just got over a bad cold. I thought for sure baby would come in the middle of that. We were up all night with her and she was so fussy. Not fun! But, when I asked my midwife if I should send her away should baby make a showing while she was sick she said no because I've already been exposed to the germs and built antibodies which would benefit baby. Hopefully your dd will get over it quickly. My daughter kicked it pretty fast.

ugh. i've got two with pink eye, but the cooloidal silver is working so hopefully they're not contagious anymore.

i totally feel your pain!

With DD, my husband got a bad stomach bug when I was 38 weeks. This time, DD caught a nasty virus at daycare at 39 weeks that she's just now getting over. I blame THEM for me not going into labor sooner!!

PS I know it's not natural, but motrin is a lifesaver when kiddos are struggling to sleep well and relax. It's helped a lot with my DD's post-viral cough.

The soup with onions and garlic would be great for her immune system - just cook well and the gas-producing stuff should be taken care of. My daughter has been sick twice during the last two weeks of my pregnancy, both unusual illnesses that she NEVER gets - we've had two trips to the doc, two prescriptions..ugg. I feel your pain! Bad timing, kiddos!

I'm with the cooloidal silver all the way!
There are also other remedies that my friend uses because her daughter gets sick more often. She gets it from the local herbal store. The person working there should be able to suggest stuff for you. It's some sort of berry thing and is just like a natural cough/congestion/cold medicine.
We use plenty of vit D and C chewables. Also
to help prevent illnesses we started washing our nose and mouth with warm salt water to remove anything in there. It takes 2-3 days for the "germs" to take life from those areas. Another thing is to drink hot liquids as well because once in your stomach they can't take life.
Breast feeding the baby will help but if your doing both...I'm not sure how that helps. I would probably rinse my nipples with the warm salt water too or something before and after just to be sure they don't pass it that way...if baby comes.
I always make soups when someone gets sick so I agree with that.
Best wishes!
I can imagine how your feeling. I made my son shower as soon as he came home from school when pregnant & had our 2nd child and will be getting back on top of it once this baby comes too. Any extra precautionaries. I also posted notes on the doors that due to illness when I had #2 we weren't allowing visitors...obvioulsy family after we explained our guidelines to them. Because even someone with diahrea can get an infant sent back to the hospital very ill. Which was what was going around the winter she was born. Luckily I'm due in April this time.
Again, best wishes!

Ahh, I didn't think of that. Good point! Smart midwife

Is that how it works, then? I've noticed that some times I make an onion-based soup and she's super gassy and other times it doesn't bother her so maybe it's the cook time that's making all the difference... That's really interesting, I didn't know that!

I'll keep that in mind. Sometimes I forget when she's sick that there is often pain associated with sickness (which is funny because when I'm sick I'm all too aware of how pained I am!)

Are you thinking of elderberry syrup?

I spent a while looking at the chewable vitamin C/D tablets at the store the other day, but decided against it. My DD is 14 months old and only has 4 teeth (almost 5!) so there wouldn't be a lot of chewing going on...

The hot liquids and salt water is good for me to prevent illness, but wouldn't work so well with her unfortunately (although I'm sure it'd make her feel a LOT better).

Thanks everyone for support and suggestions. I hope everyone else's families get better soon, too!

Sambucol is the brand name most often seen.

Also, EmergenC is a powder you put in juice or water. My kids love it.

You think elderberry syrup is safe for a barely one year old? Probably is, I'll look for it.

I did see the Emergen-C packets at the store and skipped right over them because i think they taste funny, haha. I'm sure DD would love them though! Good thinking.
