Question about cotton muslin fabric

Thread Starter
I'd like to sew some muslin sacks to store my flour and grains in my frig/freezer...the kind you see in the natural food stores that are pricey.

I'm concerned about the fabric weave--I want something tight so the flour won't spill or puff out. Is that possible?

Our local stores don't sell org cotton muslin unbleached, so I've been looking online. But I can't tell whether the weave is tight enough or the fabric is strong. Is there some kind of a standard measure for these (in weight or something?)

Any wisdom you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

It wouldn't spill, but if you smacked it around some would eek out between the threads.

I wouldn't store grains in fabric in the fridge/freezer- your food is going to pick up any odors and if something drips on it...you're out of luck.

I used this muslin to line my wedding dress and it would definitely be the weight you are looking for, however I see that the fabric is no longer being made but perhaps the stats would help guide you.

you probably don't want to put fabric bags of flour and such in the freezer! The food inside will soak up odors like crazy. I lost some really nice expensive local grain products that way.

Large glass jars are a much better option.

I agree about not using fabric due to odor issues.
