My dd is making me crazy at bedtime. She says she has to potty and many times she does, but other times she just sits there. She's 18 months. I know it's early, but we've been "playing" around with potty learning for several months now and it's kicked into a higher gear this month... mostly by her lead. She tells me she has to potty after diaper changes and now at bedtime.
I don't mind sitting there with her for extended periods during the day, but at bedtime, it just starts to get too late to be playing games.
I don't want to discourage her from telling me, trying when she might have to go or sitting patiently if she has to wait a bit to go. A couple of times she actually pooped in the potty at bedtime. After repeated attempts to get her diaper back on and her frantically waving the potty sign at me, she finally pooped in the potty 2 nights in a row. Night time is not her usual poo time.
Anyway, last night she did nothing and usually she'll pee right away if she really has to go. Then she fights me when I try to put her diaper back on. Sometimes I can get her to move on with the promise of washing her hands (big fun for her!)
Sorry this is so long, but my question is: how long do I let her sit there? I try to put her diaper back on and she keeps signing that she needs to potty. I'm having a hard time telling when it's attempt to potty and when it's a stalling technique.
Any suggestions? Should I just make pottying the last thing we do before we start to rock to sleep and make it part of our routine? I'm worried she'll still pull this last minute thing and I can't deny her potty privileges.
