Um, what's the deal with bummis covers and prefolds?

So, to add weight to my stash and make it so I don't have to wash dipes every day I bought a dozen bummis prefolds (the premium ones, not the tiny baby ones). I have a bunch of medium covers. My baby is about 21 pounds, so the medium *should* fit him . Anyways. The prefolds hang out the top and the back. Should I upsize to a large? What gives?

I use prefolds inside a variety of cover. I have always, no matter the size, had to fold the prefolds down to get them to fit.

We trifold the prefold lenghtwise and then fold in thirds to store them. Then I unfold one third and lay it into the cover with the extra third folded underneath.

That sounded more complicated than it really is.

I used to fold my prefolds the "wrong way" when trifolding inside a cover.

(but I'd advise not using the pocket like that thats there to keep wetness from leaking through the stiching around the velcro not to hold the prefold but some do it with no issues... This fold made it super easy to just trifold and go and it put the bulk right where my DD needed it.

Yep, I agree with octobermom. I fold my PFs the "other" way and they fit just fine in my covers. I have premium PFs now with Thirsties Duo Wrap size 2 covers, some Swaddlebees ABC wraps (almost exactly like a Bummis), and also fold that way to stuff them in FuzziBunz, etc. I do use the little pocket/flap to hold the PF, tho!

I always just folded down the front. It worked out well for us because DS was a bit of a race horse. He could pee out of everything! The extra fabric at the front stopped the leaks.
