no weight loss...am I using too much CO?

I've been reading the huge thread about CO and weight loss. I got really excited because I have an extra 15 lbs from pregnancy I want to lose to get back to my PPW. I've been using CO since the middle of my pregnancy (not for weight loss, for a good fat source). Now I am 9 months PP and am still using CO daily. I love the taste.

So, I fry my eggs in it each morning. Whenever I bake (now doing grain-free/low-grain so using almond and coconut flour) I use CO in place of the oil the recipe suggests. Most days I eat 1-2 extra tbsp out of the jar plain. My body craves it.

But absolutely and totally NO weight loss. Am I using too much? Should I reduce the amount I use? Otherwise I eat a completely organic, whole foods diet. I'm gluten free and eat very low dairy in my diet usually just organic pasture butter or possibly a spoonful or two of yogurt (my body doesn't like dairy, I feel ill if I eat too much). I eat mostly meat, chicken, fish, eggs, veggies, nuts, seeds, and fruits. If I eat any grains it would be quinoa or sprouted brown rice, very occasionally GF oatmeal. I don't eat any cane sugar and have a low sugar diet. When I use sugar in baking I use small amounts of maple syrup, coconut palm sugar, date sugar, or raw honey.

So what is up with the zero weight loss? I thought that now I was 9 months PP I would be getting back to PPW but the scale is not budging....The only culprit I can guess is the CO? But why would it help others lose weight and not me!!!!?

I usually look at my nut/seed intake (esp. including almond/seed flours) if I feel I've gained weight, b/c eating enough almond/pumpkin seed flour baked goods can lead to me gaining weight in a couple of days! I lean towards using more coconut flour for this reason.

So nuts/seeds is where I personally cut back first, (in general, when I'm wanting to just maintain my weight, I'll eat no more than 1/4 cup of nuts/seeds in a day--including any used in baking...when I feel like I need to lose a litte, I cut them out completely.) You could totally try cutting back on the extra spoonfulls of coconut oil and see if it makes a difference. I'm still working on the balance of fat/carbs/protein that works best for *my* body, and I think we're all different. I think it's possible to eat too much of *anything*...But if you feel your body needs the CO, I might look at other things first (nuts, carbs, etc...)

Good luck!

Maybe your body doesn't want you to lose that weight yet. I held onto a good 10-15 lbs of pp weight until dd was closer to a year, then it melted off.

Just adding anything to your diet alone is not really gonna make you lose weight. Cut out your starches/grains AND eat coconut oil and you may be on to something

I was thinking about this too--while nursing, I don't know that I'd personally try to actively lose weight. (I did lose weight while nursing, and a lot of it, b/c of diet changes, but it was kind of something that just happened, and it was after my ds was 14 months old...) I really don't know much about it, but I'm glad the point was raised. Maybe your body is just holding on to some weight for some reason while you're nursing??

I also agree w/ lisamarie. Check this for info on carbs and weight loss: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/the-p...ate-continuum/

I didn't read through your first post closely enough. Dropping grains was really helpful for the last lbs. I was carrying. And something I'd personally do b/4 dropping nuts. (I've never been thin/skinny--until now--and TF eating along w/ avoiding allergens caused major weight loss for me. I've been shocked and excited by it all, but dropping grains just really slimmed everything out, and I lost bloating and stuff that had been hanging around my middle...) Trying grain free could be helpful as well, as well as looking at carb intake. That's probably where I would go b/4 cutting fat if I wanted to lose weight...

Thanks for the advice. I eat grains maybe a portion 1-2x a week with dinner. They make up a very small amount of my diet. But if you all think cutting them out completely will help then I will do that for sure.

I do eat a huge, huge amount of nuts. Nuts and seeds are something I really crave. And I bake with almond flour alot recently. So maybe that is where to go next? I eat lots of almonds, really a lot of almonds. Also lots of hemp seeds and hemp oil, and pumpkin seed butter.

I agree, it could be that you are just consuming a tad too many calories..even thugh they ae all healthy calories, too many is still too many.
I also very much agree that many womn find they can't lose that last 10-15 pounds until they are done nursing. It;s like your body needs to hang on to it as a "store" if you will. Once you wean, it will probably magically come off.

Ugh...I hope it is a matter of cutting back on nuts not waiting until weaning...I think she will be BF'ding for many years to come and I want to get back to my PPW NOW!

Your dd's nursing needs will change as she grows...at least that was my experience. So you may see a change in you once she spaces out the nursing more. My dd was nursing a LOT at night the first 2 years but then that diminished drastically, as did daytime come to think of it ;-)

I agree that sometimes your body does what it wants! I have not changed my eating habits or exercise habits and I am 10 pounds lighter than I was 6 months ago. My baby also just turned one. I believe it was the same way with my other son. Until he was a year, my body just held on to that extra weight.

Granted I don't have weight to lose, but sometimes when I'm in a "munchie" mode here's what I do: Weigh out a few ounces of nuts and put in a container, when they are gone i'm done for the day. At about 175 calories for an ounce, you can stack up the cals pretty quick! It's not a big deal if you are maintaining because nuts are full of fiber, good fat and I believe digest pretty quickly for energy, but trying to LOSE is another thing. If you are craving nuts, try making homemade nut/snack bars. It's so easy to pop several nuts in your mouth, but having something tangible in the palm of your hand more like a "piece" of something can help wtih the portioning. I just throw a bunch of nuts/seeds, coconut oil and maybe some banana or a few dates and cinnamon in a FP and turn it on utnil everything is chopped fine, then press in a pan and bake at 350 just until it smells toasty. cool then cut in to bars. you can add an egg to help it all stick together.

Ime, coconut oil and better eating only help you lose weight if your body "wants" to lose weight. If your body is holding onto a few extra pounds (and 15 pounds definitely could be) for nursing, then that won't help you lose it. If however, the weight is unhealthy for you, it will. That's my experience, is that eating plenty of CO and otherwise eating TF and healthy, helps me maintain a healthy for me weight (which may not be as skinny as fashion demands, depending on the person,). When I was a bit overweight, it helped me lose it. If I were underweight, it would help me gain it. but if it is weight your body needs, for being pregnant or nursing, or because your body is best at a higher weight than is fashionable, then it won't help you lose it.
