Toddler--infection? alternatives to antibiotics?

Hi all,

My 22 month old got sick 10 days ago from the cold my daughter had. His turned into croup for a couple of days, and then just a regular cold. He seemed to be getting better. Then, Wednesday night, he started shivering in his sleep. I picked him up and held him and covered him with a blanket. About 15 minutes later, he puked all over me. He didn't sleep well that night, but never seemed to have more than a slight fever. He hasn't puked since. But, the next day, again, he never seemed to have more than a slight fever, if any, but he definitely acted sick and slept a lot of the day. Yesterday, much the same, seeming a little better and no fever at all. This morning, around 5:20, he woke up and asked for medicine. He definitely felt warmer than before. He had slept better last night than all the other nights, but woke up much warmer (I didn't take his temp, so I don't know exact). He has some of the signs of an ear infection, which I read get worse at night even if they act fine during the day.

He is DEFINITELY teething though as well (which is part of what is causing me confusion). He has pointed several times to the place in his mouth where he does not yet have his 2-year molar and saying it hurts. So, this could all be teething, but I know kids also have compromised immune systems while teething.

I hesitate to take him to the doctor since it's saturday, and we'd have to take him to intensive care, where I'm 90% sure they'll give him antibiotics. Which maybe he needs.

What do you all think? And do you have any alternative suggestions of things I can give him to help?

Thanks!

ETA: He's also been insisting on sleeping ON me. Which could just be because he's sick and wants to be close, but he mostly wants to lay his head on my belly, which I wonder if he feels better with the elevation. Just a little more (perhaps relevant) info.

If he is pointing in his mouth and has a fever he could have strep. I would take him in for a strep test. Then he would need antibiotics if he has it.

Thanks. His fever suddenly spiked at like 2PM today, and it was 102 under the arm, so we took him to urgent care. He has an ear infection. Antibiotics, as I suspected. I just need to find him some good probiotics.

This is a copy of a recent post of mine regarding ear infections and immune system.

Fever- no medication approach

How can I get rid of ear infection w/o antibiotics?

I'd do homeopathics and stop ALL dairy and add whole food probiotics.

Most ear infections are viral, which means they won't respond to antibiotics. Despite this fact and statistics that prove ear infections (85% of cases) are viral, antibiotics are STILL prescribed by many, many doctors.

"Ear drainage – if you see blood or pus draining out of the ear, then it is probably an infection with a ruptured eardrum. DON'T WORRY! These almost always heal just fine, and once the eardrum ruptures the pain subsides." ~ Dr. Sears

"New research is suggesting that 80% of uncomplicated ear infections will resolve within 4 to 7 days without antibiotics. Parents who choose not to use antibiotics can treat the pain and fever with Auralgan anesthetic ear drops and ibuprofen or acetominophen. " ~ Dr. Sears
