pregnancy after operative hysteroscopy?

Hi Ladies,

I have been scouring the posts for anyone's experiences with operative hysteroscopy; maybe it's been to just start my own thread and see if anyone is in the same boat...

After having three m/c's in a row (within a year), I started seeing an RE. A diagnostic hysteroscopy revealed a handful of polyps, which were removed that day. My RE also found a larger fibroid near my cervix. I had an operative hysteroscopy a few days ago to have that removed. I'm currently recovering, with a balloon catheter inside me to prevent scarring, on the pill for a week to promote uterine healing, and on antibiotics. By the end of this cycle, my RE says I should be mostly healed and ready to try again.

I love my surgeon/RE and trust everyone in the practice (CWRC in NYC). Although - as most of you who are going through this likely know - they can't really ever say what's causing the miscarriages. It seems to be more of a process of eliminating possible culprits. The fibroids/polyps are the only ones they've found.

I guess I'm just looking for a little kick of optimism. Does anyone have any post-hysteroscopy success stories?

Long story short - I had a uterine birth defect (bicornuate) and large fibroids. 6ish years ago I had abdominal surgery to remove them. Fast forward 4 years and 2 m/c later, during my 1 day pre-IVF work-up my RE found polyps (a mere 6 months after a lap/hyst with another doc to rule out/correct adhesions and/or uterine scarring). The RE did an operative hysteroscopy combined with a laparoscopy because he suspected that in addition to the polyps I might also have scar tissue left over from my original reconstructive surgery and the lap would prevent puncture of the uterus while removing scar tissue. Turns out I had a lot of scar tissue that he was able to clean up. He speculated that the scar tissue could have caused my m/c if implantation occurred there and the embryo outgrew its blood supply.

My RE had me wait 2 cycles before ttc (I also had the balloon in). We ttc'd for an additional 4 cycles and then called it a day and did IVF - I was pretty crispy fried by that point and was ready to call in the big guns (it had been 3 years since my last pregnancy at this point). We got lucky on our first IVF and conceived. We started with twins but lost one sometime after seeing both heartbeats at 8 weeks and the 12 wk u/s. Other than that, my pregnancy was completely uneventful and we're now grateful parents to an 8 month old.

I'm assuming they've done a thrombophilia work-up and also checked for thyroid antibodies?

I am so sorry to hear of your struggles... I have to have the balloon placed inside me as well. I had to have 2 DNC's and from there I developed scar tissue. My Dr wants to remove the tissue and place the balloon for a week. I am freaking out, but my main question is on the pain and what I will be able to do with the balloon inside of me. I have gone through 2 cycles of IVF and know how painful that balloon was and can not imagine that for a week. Any help or suggestions you can give to prepare myself would be greatly appreciated. I will most likely be spending that week with my mother-in-law and want to prepare as much as possible so it is easy for her.

Rachael, I don't remember having any pain from the balloon. Mine was in for at least a week, maybe 10 days? Because I also had a lap w/the hysterosocpy I had some of the normal discomfort from that. We flew home a couple days later & it was fine. Taking it out was uncomfortable due to cramping. My local doc removed it & there was some confusion about the type of balloon that was used which meant he had to try a couple different things. Other than that, it was life as usual for me with the balloon.

I'm curious when you say you had a ballon used with your IVF cycles. I haven't heard of that before & was wondering why they would do that?
