Academic-appropriate resources needed.

Hey, all.

I'm preparing a syllabus for a college course I will teach this spring on Christianity and Human Sexuality. I would like to include some appropriate readings on circumcision, but I very much want to focus on contemporary Christian practice and to emphasize that RIC is a social/customary practice rather than a legitimate medical one.

I've looked at a few books on Amazon and am not thrilled with any of them for the purposes of the course. Most books with a religious scope are more historical than I'm interested in and discuss Judaism rather than Christianity.

I would be grateful for any recommendations of articles, etc. Some of my students are likely to be nursing majors, and probably most of them will at some point have kids, so I think this could be a really valuable discussion.

Thanks for any suggestions anybody might have.

Of course you can discuss religion, it's a spirituality forum .

I can't really speak in depth to Christianity and sexuality, but I'm thinking the reason why you are getting more historical perspectives is that today's Christianity is extremly diverse. There is no single voice of Christianity regarding sexual issues. I mean, some Christian groups are perfectly fine with birth control, others not. They differ by how they view the role of women, homosexuality, pleasure, sexual relationships outside of miarriage, etc. Very fundamental and complicated aspects of sexuality. So finding a single "Christian view" on sexuality, I would think, would be pretty much impossible. You might have better luck if you began to look by denomination.

Catholics against circumcision would be a good place to start looking for resources. They have a webpage with many different articles on it written by various religious authorities. From there you can probably get leads to more info.

Thanks very much! I really appreciate the links!

I originally put the thread in TCAC, which (as of course I know, on some level of my brain) does not host threads on religion. It was totally my big stupid bad - I hate making mistakes like that. Moderator screw-up, for your viewing pleasure.

This isn't about circumcision, but about birth control. It was written by a professor at Bethel College for use in a course of hers.

Might be useful for your course.
