DS19mos has always been a dream at bedtime. Until about 12 mos I nursed him down, and since 12 months we have nursed quietly in the dark in his room, he unlatches, gestures at his crib, I put him in, he "helps" me pull the crib side up, lays down and waits to be covered, and then I leave. Not a peep.

Until about 2 weeks ago. About ten seconds after I close the door, he winds up with a huge scream, and then screams uncontrollably for about 3 minutes, then (I presume) sleep. The first few days, I went in after about 30 seconds, he wasn't even crying - just screaming. I pick him up, he gives me a hug, he gestures to his crib, we go through the whole laydown again, I leave, and ten seconds later the screaming starts. By about the fifth night, I held out, and realized he actually quiets down really quickly.

The thing is, I can't figure out why. DH thinks he has just realized that life goes on in the house when he goes to sleep, and he feels angry, but when I go in, he doesn't want to leave the room, he wants to go back in his bed.

Did this happen to any good bedtimers at around this age?
