I discovered cloth menstrual pads at a Nashville health food store about 20 years ago and although I don't use them exclusively, I feel good about them. I also use the "Keeper".

I don't know if it is my age (44) or what, but I have extremely heavy periods. I wear full skirts during my periods to hide the bulk, but I have used cloth pre-fold diapers (my mother said she'd used them when we were too broke to buy "real" menstrual products), and I most lately have used some old flannel receiving blankets (too small to do much else with now--and you can get then super cheap at thrift stores), plain cotton flannel remnants I got for very cheap at JoAnn's (which I haven't even finished around the edges and am finding it isn't raveling too much), and I've even used some waffle-weave (not terry cloth) dishtowels which are just perfect when folded.

The original menstrual pads I bought were a type that folded into 3rd's or 4th's depending if it was a regular or maxi size. I also have bought and made some that snap around the panty crotch. Although close-fitting panties hold the snap-less pads in place, more than once I've had to fish a pad out of the toilet because I forgot about it and it fell in! A safety pin would be enough to prevent that.
