Can We Talk About Food Philosophy and Baby Weight? - Page 2

Well I'm not that worried about dairy b/c the only kind I consume is some cottage cheese and incidental cheese in foods. I don't drink milk and it seems that my food aversions include egg. Just the smell or sight of egg ...blech! ETA: oh and I guess I eat some sour cream w/ mexican food...and I guess egg is in baked foods too. :/

Although I do remember being in love with Coffee icecream when I was in the 3rd trimester last time. Again, though, I can't see that adding weight to her b/c I could barely get a few spoonfuls (I am very sensitive to caffeine).

DD had a 15in head circ, I don't know if this is big or not. It is a bit bigger than some of my siblings but some of them were 9/10lbs.

I just haven't found my birthing 'peace' yet in this pregnancy. At 6 weeks I guess I have time though.

Thanks everyone, and especially lunarlady...that is great insight on how we are really nourishing our bodies. I remember a coworker talking about how she actually lost bone density and had such severe leg cramping that she needed medication. Not a good way to start out parenting!

I didn't read the whole post, so bear with me....

There is SOME research (Dr. Oz is big on it in his YOU: Having a Baby book) that indicates that how your body is being fed during pregnancy does influence your child in so much as it teaches them about scarcity or glut of food. A child whose mother is undernourished will have a normal baby at birth, but that child will be genetically programmed to hoard fat b/c it was gestated in a famine environment.

All I can say is WHO CARES? Are you eating a balanced, healthy diet? Do you feel YOUR nutitional needs are being met? Are you eating a rainbow of foods to get nutrients?

Then your baby will be what your baby will be. Eat well, live well.

Yes, I like the concept and that is how I felt the first time around.

I'm not so confident this time around, and it's not even comments (I've never been one to be taken down by comments).

I'm just in a different place then last time...e.g. I'm nursing my DD and although she enjoys solids here and there whenever we eat, I know the majority of her nutrition is my milk. That has to draw additional nutrients, right?

Also, my awareness of traditional/whole foods has changed recently and I find myself critical of my diet. Am I eating a balanced diet? Probably, and for sure better than the average. But I still eat on the go way too much due to work and school...we eat out a lot...I try to make healthy choices but I'm a far cry from the healthy lifestyles talked about on this forum.

I was vegetarian for my first two pregnancies. Ds1 was born at 36w1d at 6lbs 14 oz, DS2 was born at 36w4d and 7lbs 3oz. I started eating meat and ate it throughout this pregnancy and DS3 was born at 36w4d at 8lbs 1 oz!! I did not have GD. HOWEVER, my DH is 6'6 and 350lbs. He was 12lbs 8 oz at birth and so to me, this is totally normal that I'd have big babies. Oh, and I only gained 15lbs with each pregnancy (I am obese).

I think there's a major problem with these studies of protein intake and birth weight and that's the type of protein consumed. Beef cattle in the US are given steroids to make them gain weight faster some of this gets passed on in the beef. I think it's much more likely that it's the steroids in meat and milk (BGH is just starting to be taken out of milk) that are influencing the size of babies in these studies. I would love to see the results of a study that used organic grass fed beef and organic raw milk.

I completely agree, i'm waiting for a study like that as well! That being said, I'm not a huge meat fan and to me, 100g protein daily (as many suggest) seems almost impossible for me and i'd rather not kill myself trying...it seems unnatural even! my dh used to be totally into fitness and said he'd heard that your body can't even absorb over 30 at one time. Don't know if that's true though.
