WEEKLY RAMBLE/CHAT for JAN 24th-30th - Page 2

My bad night sweats were over after a week, but I still wake up clammy and overly sweaty a lot.

I'm trying the herbal rememdies first, though I was told to get All Purpose Nipple Ointment before Nyastin if going the non-herbal route.
I'll definitely come back and report how it works. Now that I'm putting it on right (after nursing instead of before--doh!), when he opens his mouth the white stuff on his tongue is all yellow, so at least now it's sticking around and hopefully dealing with the problem. He is awfully gassy, and somewhere I read that the yeast gives them gas as it dies off...? I'm hoping that's what's happening.

Two or three weeks ago, I headed off a bout of mastitis with GSE, and I wonder if stopping taking it on top of having just gotten rid of the nipple shields let the yeast grow faster. I don't want to take it now, though, when I'm already taking the prescription pills, so we'll see how Western medicine does on this one. I wish I'd taken him in sooner, since I'm pretty sure I caught it just as it was starting at two weeks, too early to get a prescription, and then wrote what I saw in his mouth off as lingering milk after feedings for too long. His thrush has been too "pretty"...no cottage cheesiness to it.

Quickie post....

Emma is 5w1d today.... hit 9 lbs! Her weight gain has slowed down, but I think that's pretty typical. Mommy is STILL spotting -- even after the D&C at 9d pp... I've got my follow up tomorrow so we'll see what the OB says.

So, on the sleep front...he pediatrician seemed to think I could be trying to get him to sleep much earlier in the evening, like 6 pm. Right now, he usually is awake from somewhere between 6 and 8 pm until sometime between 2:30 and 4 am. I'm a night owl, so I'd be totally happy with getting him to start his night at midnight or 1 am so we could go to bed with Daddy, but am I just setting us up for trouble later on? He's always been a night owl, too, in the womb, and I kind of like having him awake when DH is home from work.
I wonder about this, too! Henry rarely stays asleep for long if you're not either holding him or in bed with him. So his nighttime sleep is actually excellent, but he goes to bed when I go to bed. So far that's fine by me, but I too wonder if I'm going to regret this later.

For all those suffering from thrush out there...what initially causes thrush? Are there certain things/activities/experiences etc. that increase one's risk for getting a yeast infection - either in mom or baby - to start the whole mess off with?

Hang in there and hope it clears up soon for all of you guys!

My guy has a perpetually whitish tongue but I think it is just milk residue...does anyoen else see this?

Truckerdoo, it is kind of weird, but yeast live everywhere. Everywhere--on the surface of your skin, in the body, etc. The problem occurs when the balance is tipped and there is an *overgrowth* of the yeastie beasties... and then you need to restore balance with the beneficial bacterial and all that to keep the yeast from taking over.

So the kind of yeast that the baby can get thrush from is typically from the on the skin of the nipple, or sometimes babies are exposed to the yeastie beasties during birth . Some babies develop thrush, some babies may have some yeast in their mouth (the white tongue, redish spots and red, raw diaperrash, etc.) but aren't really bothered by it...

oh, fussy baby,... gotta run...

Age: 9 weeks, 2 days

A is spending a bit more time happily looking around at things -- I've noticed that he stays awake longer and longer in the carrier, and I've managed to get a quick (~10 min) "exercise" routine in with him on the floor for 3 days in a row now. Evenings are still a bit frustrating. I can get stuff done in the daytime (laundry, dishes, food prep, school stuff for the kids, vacuuming, etc.) fairly well with him in the wrap, but at night I want to sit down and read/write or crochet, and he doesn't like that. Sigh.

Sara -- your post made me smile, nice to hear how happy you guys are. I haven't tried an ergo, so I can't help you there, but I wanted to suggest that you give the other carriers you have a try now and then. Babies change fast, he might end up liking one of them before long.

To everyone with thrush, I hope it clears up soon!

Tattooed Hand -- I agree with carmel about the PPD. It sounds like you have a lot on your plate, and this is your first, right? That's a huge transition. Also, I can't imagine trying to do academic work right now. I'm in a book club that involves weekly readings and then an email discussion, and I can hardly get through the readings without falling asleep, let alone take notes and then try to put together anything to say to the group. Being tired takes a huge toll, even when there isn't a new baby in the mix.

Name: carmel and baby shurgah bum

Baby's age: 6 weeks 4 days

Milestones/Updates: Shurgah bum is super strong, and likes to try to stand up in my lap. This freaks me out because this is how my oldest son was as a baby--and he was super physical, super moving constantly, all boy. This is fun, but when you set him down on the side walk and he runs, it is kind of terrifying as a parent! Like runs, possibly in the street (as a 12 to 18 month old!).

But he is super sweet. Wants to eat food--he fusses when we're cooking something that smells good, and makes the 'air nursing' mouth (tongue and lips) when we eat and he's looking at us. Which will be interesting, because I'm all for delayed solids and baby-led self-feeding...

I still need to take him to the doctor! I think it is time to call...

He's just such a happy smiley guy, though... I love how he yells " AAAAAHH" and then just stops.

Thoughts (HA! who has the brain power for thoughts?)

I need to get a jogging stroller, me thinks for the 2 toddlers. I need to get my rear in gear. I can wear some of my old pants, but not the ones I really ywant to wear. I also need a haircut. Badly. Some days it stays a ratty messy mess and I just put a hat on when I go out. but it is so long that it sneaks out.

I think we will be able to get our minivan in the next few weeks after we get our tax return! I am excited to get the van before summer because it means we can go camping in the summer I can't not go camping in the summer.

And we're starting our springs starts inside, I can't wait to garden and grow stuff. I was so freaked about toxo during the summer that I didn't do much gardening. But now I'm ready to rock my biodynamic permaculture hybrid garden...

Carmel: Very exciting about the van! I hope you can get one. I love having one. Both my kids were the run into the streets and get lost kind. My DD started walking at 9 months old. Being outside with her after that was hard. Everytime I put her down, she was OFF. Gosh they are fast little things too. We took the kids to Disney World when she was 2. She got lost 3 times! Not kidding.

We're back from the embassay! Now its just a waiting game to see if everything was approved I am trying not to think about it and just hope we see a passport in the mail Monday(ish)

I am so proud of DS, he was an awesome traveler he did so well and was such a good kid AND we go a SMILE!!! Lots of them now

As of this morning he is (almost) 7 weeks and 14.2 lbs

This week I am starting my eating better and exercising regularly schedule. I am asking DH for 30-40 mins a day so I can go run/yoga/something.. the lack of exercise is causing me major depression and anxiety surges I am convinced.. I really need to put it back into my life.

I'm glad your trip went so well.

My DH seems to have more success taking care of a baby when I leave the house. If I hang around he feels like I'm judging how he is caring for our baby--like he isn't doing stuff the right way. (Which I totally don't do, I just try to make gentle suggestions, but I guess when a baby is screaming its head off, it sounds critical.)

And he knows that if I am here and the baby cries long enough I'll take him.

So it might be good for DH and DS's bonding if you got to go out to exercise.
yeah I agree about leaving to exercise because 9 out of 10 times if I try to do it here I have to stop in the middle to 'feed' DS or something else DH feels he might need.. so yah- Im going to start going out
post #33 of 38
Ithappened, I say you should definitely go for it with the exercise! I tell you, I'm on my third kid now, and I have realized that exercising every day is what gets me through the tough times. Even if I have gotten three hours of sleep the night before, exercising is just that little bit of time for me that I need and such a good stress reliever. Also, I agree with the pp that says that it will help your dh bond with your son and learn to care for him in his own way. My husband got to be such a good baby/toddler comforter when I trained for a marathon when my first ds was little.

As far as the baby, Silas is 5 weeks old now. I can't believe how the time has flown by! This is truly the first time that I have enjoyed the newborn experience. I'm also mourning that this will be our last baby.

Silas is cooing, smiling, and still sleeping a lot. He is up to 13 pounds after a low of 8 1/2 pounds or so, and is starting to look a little chubby. Love it!

I'm back to exercising but still have 15 pounds to lose. After losing 25 pounds in the first week, I haven't lost much of anything in the last month. I'm feeling a little worried, but I can't honestly remember how the weight loss went the last two times. I know that by 6 months postpartum, I was down to my normal weight. I'm hoping for the same this time, but am feeling impatient and not wanting to buy any new clothes.

yeah thats been the hard part for me, my normal clothes are still a little tight but I dont want to buy new clothes right now since Im hoping in 2-3 more months I'll be back to normal.. but then again, maybe I won't..
I'm also a believer in going to the gym for workouts. Once you're a mom time to yourself is so scarce and hard-won...might as well use it to do something that will make you feel good ALL the time. I am trying to establish a weekly routine so I make sure to take that time. Otherwise I will be a bitter wife in a few months. 20lbs to go.
I've thought about joining a gym, but the problem here is the closest ones that are good take about 20 mins to get to and come back from, so if I have an hour I end up getting 15-20mins of exercise in.. there is a crappy gym (or so I hear) closer by -- I can walk to in 10 mins and I might go check it out since all I really want is a decent tredmill and elpitical machine.

At the moment I am just going out for hour long walks with our hyperactive massively large dog which sort of turns my walk into an upper body workout as well, although its far from relaxing.. at least its something..

I also started the 30day shred which I do in the mornings that DS/DH sleep in (which is 4/5 mornings out of 7)

I have about 6 lbs to lose until my clothes are comfortable to wear again but I swear 5lbs of that are just in my upper thigh, 1 lb is a pouch in my stomach. . . I don't get it.
I know, my clothes are uncomfortable to wear and I swear all the last 5 lbs or so I have left is in my belly. It's taking me back to those annoying days of early pregnancy when I just looked a little fat. Except now I actually am.

YES! I thought the same thing this morning while looking in the mirror. I know they say 9 months off and on.. but I think if its like this for the next 9 months I'll be seriously depressed. The thing is, I'm afraid to 'diet' since Im BFing so I'm having trouble figuring out how much to eat/workout without affecting quality (but ironically I have too much supply).
