Help! 26 weeks pregnant and milk has turned into colostrum!

Well, I knew it could happen, but I was hoping that I would be ok.

I'm 26 weeks pregnant with #2 and DD is still nursing. I had thought my supply was a little lower, but it didn't seem to affect her.

This week she's had pneumonia so is nursing more frequently and I noticed that my nipples were getting a bit 'overused' feeling. I have been checking my milk by expressing a tiny bit and it's always been white...until last night. It's colostrum which is why DD has been sucking harder, I think.

I really want to tandem nurse for both DD and myself as we had terrible problems to begin with (DD didn't latch for almost 6 weeks). I am hoping that at least an overlap with nursing will help with the new baby.

She is frequently swapping sides (I'm guessing because it tastes funny). Is there anything I can do to encourage to her to keep nursing or to make sure there is enough colostrum for her to be satiated?

Thanks and sorry for the long post.

Keep yourself hydrated and keep eating. It is normal for milk to turn to colostrum at this point or earlier. Sounds like she still wants to nurse, so let her when possible. Even though it is less milk it really packs a good punch now!

I'm 27 weeks and have had colustrum rather than milk for at least a couple months now. I know when I was nursing dd while pg due to dehydration I was dry nursing from 11 weeks on, but neither dry nursing or colustrum slowed her down. This is the third pg I have nursed through and colustrum has not stopped any of them. This time around my nursling will be 2 shortly before my edd so I was very worried at the possibility of him weaning while I was pg. It has been very disturbing when ds has had multiple stomach bugs and I didn't have milk as a fall back when he couldn't keep food in.

I lost my milk around 25 weeks and my DS just continued to nurse for comfort until my milk came in again when his brother was born. It was a LONG 3 months, let me tell you. I had pumped and frozen milk to give him but he wanted nummies.

Good luck mama.

Thanks, mamas. I really want to tandem nurse if I can (and if she wants to) and do not like the idea of her being encouraged to wean because of my milk's taste.

So far good, though, because she is still going.
