S/O: Anti-anxiety meds for dogs?

No one responded to my pica thread (I know it hasn't been up long), but I've started wondering if our 11 year old dog who has no real behavior problems other than near-fatal pica (objects lodged in his intestines have led to two surgeries and countless enemas) would benefit from meds. He is walked fairly often and gets attention all day from DH and DD (DH is SAHD), but he still manages to find foreign objects to eat (both in the house and yard). It's been a problem all his life. We've tried giving him all kinds of treats and chew toys, we've tried a muzzle (he gets it off), we crate him when we're not home.

Basically, we need something to keep him alive, because we're seriously losing patience with him. If he had needed surgery this time (he's at the vet now), we probably would have refused. It's gotten terribly expensive.

So what do you think? Have you medicated your dog? How's it working out?

We medicated our dog when she was young with anti-anxiety meds for about 3 months - it worked really well for us. It let her calm down enough for her to learn that we always come back. She's still more anxious than most dogs (she's 11 now) but no longer making herself sick anxious.
