OK- We are down to the wire and still can't figure out a baby name we are happy about. To refresh people: We are americans living in Germany. We are only here for another three years so we need a baby name that is easy to deal with in America. I want to honor our loved ones: 1. Dh's grandma Anne 2. My grandma, Ruby 3. My mom Lynn (we are very close and I get sick of babies always getting their dad's last name so why not my mom? haha)

ok here are the names we can semi agree on. It's quite difficult as DH and I have VERY different tastes in names. He likes Addison, I like older, classic names. Our last name is very similar to Jeffrey.

1. Adelynn Ruby Jeffrey -- after the name Adeline/Adelaide which I like but am not sure if the lynn makes it trashy, I want it pronounced like Madelyn without the M. Not sure how to achieve it and still get my mom's name in there without looking stupid.
2. Anneliese Ruby Jeffrey --- want it pronounced Ah-na-leez, do you think americans would do that?
3. Amelia Ruby Jeffrey--- DH loves Aviation
4. Morgen/Morgan Ruby Jeffrey - DH wants the morgen spelling bc it means morning in German. I am not sure if that looks kinda silly or if the Morgen spelling makes it look more feminine which I like.

PLEASE HELP.

1. I like Adelynn Ruby the best, though you will be dealing with the headaches of a made-up spelling (or at least an old spelling that no one will recognize easily). I do agree that if you want Lynn pronounced correctly, you'll have to stay with Adelynn rather than Adeline .

2. Anneliese is beautiful, but the spelling is complicated (I would think Annelise would be the most obvious). Plus I don't think you'll get the leeze out of that, more the "leese".

3. Amelia Ruby...I love the name Amelia, and think that it's BEAUTIFUL!! Also Amelia Jeffrey sounds great. I just don't know if Amelia Ruby is the best flow of a name. It's not bad, and depending how you pause between the names it can be very pretty, but it doesn't have that same pretty tumble as Adelynn Ruby and Anneliese Ruby.

4. Morgen Ruby. This is my least favorite. I just don't like the e in Morgan. To me it makes it sound more like the word "organ" because in the US it's pronounced more like "orgen." The meaning in German is pretty, but for me it doesn't overcome the awkwardness of the spelling in English.

I really like the name Adelynn. And I think the spelling makes sense. Amelia would be my second choice. I thought of that as a middle name for one of my daughters. Good luck. Girls names are my favorite.

1. Adelynn Ruby Jeffrey -- I love the names Adeline/Adelaide, but I do think the Lynn bit makes the name look a little made up. However, when I said it in my head, I did pronounce it the way you're looking for.
2. Anneliese Ruby Jeffrey --- I love the name, but I think you will probably have issues with people pronouncing/spelling it the way you're looking for.
3. Amelia Ruby Jeffrey--- This is the one I voted for. I love the name Amelia, and I think it will have the fewest spelling and pronunciation issues.
4. Morgen/Morgan Ruby Jeffrey - I appreciate the meaning of the Morgen spelling, but I'm not sure it's worth the life time of correcting people. It's a pretty name, though.

I was on board with Anneliese in your earlier polls.

But with the addition of Amelia, that's my choice. What a terrific name, wonderful namesake, no pronunciation issues and not trendy or common. Way classier than Adelynn or Morgen.

I vote Amelia, hands down!

I love Amelia, but according to the popularity charts, it is rising quickly, with special thanks to the "Night at the Museum" movie.

ugh really??? I know its like 77 or something in the SS charts but I could live with that. Not if it's like 10!

Perhaps this is not helpful or even useful, but it is a little bit funny.

I LOVE the name Anneliese. When I was searching baby name websites and saw it (with this spelling: Annelise), I said to DH "what do you think about this one?" (as I point to it on the screen).

He recoils and says "What kind of a name is ANAL-EYES?"

That is why I want it pronounced Ah-na and not anne-a . Plus some Americans are spelling it Analiese which is JUST BAD!!! Like anal-ease. The correct German way is Anneliese which doesn't look or sound like anal Americans ruin everything! lol.

I would go with Adelyn simply because of the family connection with your mom. Yes, it's unusual and some might muck it up but you know what? They'll get used to it. People always do.

I dont think it would ever even hit # 25... too many other extremely trendy names out there. Its cute, and in my eyes... not overused

and you wont have problems with people misspelling or mispronouncing it which obviously seems to bother you some.

Really? Cuz Im 27 and still get annoyed by the large number of people who misspell or mispronounce my name. Including on legal documents which NEEDS to be spelled correctly.

Well on legal documents it really does need to be spelled correctly, and it usually is even if you have an unusual name. They are, um, supposed to check things like that! lol. I have a very unusually-spelled last name and the same thing always happened, but no big worries. Yeah, I still vote for Adelyn because I think family-based baby names are the best.

As a teacher, I'll weigh in, as I always have that first day "how do I pronounce this" issue. I also work in middle school, so I get to see how they nickname each other, which is something to consider when naming.
1) Adelynn. This is pretty easy. Aid-lynn. And unusual. Most likely will end up an Addy.
2) Anneliese. A very pretty and classic name, but does lend itself to incorrect pronunciation. I read it and thought Ah-na-leese. Or Ann-a-leese. So she will have to correct people, and will most likely end up an Anne, Ana, or Ani.
3) Amelia. A classic name that is easy to pronounce, and does not lend itself to nicknames. She might end up Lia to some friends, but it is already short enough that she will most likely go by the whole thing.
4) Morgen/Morgan. This one I don't really like just because it is a cross gender name with the classes I have right now. Meaning I have both boy and girl Morgans. I sort of like names that tell the gender. Oh, and the girl Morgan is "Morg" to her friends, which sounds a lot like morgue, so that kind of weirds me out.

ooo yeah what do you think about that?

I personally know 5 women who named their dd's Amelia in December. So she will NOT be the only kid in her class with that name in the states.

I really like Anneliese, my friend spells and pronounces her dd's name that way.

I like the sound a-da-lynn, not ADE-Lynn. I would hope people would pronounce it like Madelyn without an M. Would it make sense to just spell it Adeline and tell people it's Lynn not Line? Would that make it classier looking?

I like Ah-na-leese but hate ANNE-a leese. I will be irate if someone calls her Annie. It REALLY bothers me for some reason. I just can't stand that name, not sure why. I like Ani though. hmmmm what to do. My DH told me that if the baby comes out looking like a Ruby he might consider it as a first name but don't count on it. He does not love that name at all. Plus, two of my friends "stole" the name after I told them it was my favorite name. One named her baby in November and one named hers a week ago. They both had other names and now they have Rubys bc I told them it was my favorite names. They both told me that it was the reason and I should not care bc I had told them DH didn't want the name. Plus, its not like I own the name, it's just my beloved grandma's name...

whelp- I like 'em all... but like most, Morgan/Morgen is my least favorite. Not because of the meaning, which I find just beautiful, but it seems to pale in comparison to the other lovely names.

If you spelled it Adeline you might get a-duh-LINE' or A'-duh-line as well as a-duh-LEEN' or A'-duh-leen depending on the region of origin of the pronouncer, or their preference... just something to think about. I like Adelynn spelling because it truely honors your mother, and in my mind doesnt become "trashy" until you add a hyphen or an additional capital letter in the same name without a space before it. sorry if that offends anyone who has that kind of a name..

I love Amelia Jeffrey, and it sounds to me like she could be a succesful writer or fashion designer without having to take a pseudonym. that would be good (but also, this name reminds me of the book series entitled Amelia Bedelia. I dont remember the content, but it always reminds me of that title. totally an aside, of course.)

However, my favorite is still Anneliese, spelled the traditional way. I love the use of traditional/classical names, and spelling them "correctly" instead of making it easier for people. it's a shame that people now feel the need to dumb-down even the spelling of their childs name so others wont have to strain their brains! <off soapbox> And, you can introduce your daughter, and she can introduce herself and pronounce it correctly. hopefully her friends/teachers/family will get it, and can pass it along.

I can't believe how close you are to meeting this little beauty!!!!

OK, now to vote.

do you naturally pronounce it Ah-na or Anne-a??? Thanks for your help!! I still wish I could have the "perfect" baby name but I just can't seem to find it! LOL.

I would pronounce it Ah-na, but that's because I have a cousin Anna, and they pronounce it Ah-na. and I love it that way. sounds more refined and classy than regular old Anne-a (especially when you add in our regional accent, which makes Anne sound more like ee-an. eww.)
