So, what is the reason that some people can't tolerate Coconut Oil again?

I have a friend who was inspired by me (I didn't really necessarily recommend it, but she knew I did it) to start adding coconut oil to her diet. I take it in my coffee, and she started doing that as well. For a few months, she has had tummy issues (upset tummy) and recently cut out gluten and got better a bit... but realized that the Coconut Oil was still making her have upset tummy.

Any ideas about why it might be bothering her? I was thinking yeast, but maybe I'm totally wrong about that. I feel bad because she sort of took it because of me, and it caused problems for her. She's going to try just cooking her eggs in it, and see how that works for her.

Well..my dd is allergic to a number of nuts, including coconut. It happens. My dh also has numerous nut allergies, although coconut seems okay.

Coconut oil kills off bad yeasties and what your friend is experiencing could be die off symptoms. Or it could be a poor quality coconut oil she is consuming.

Also it is high in amines (possibly histamine) and moderate in salicylates.

I'm going to have to google this to figure out what that means! *blush*

She was taking what I take, Nutiva, so it's probably not that. Not aware of any allergies that she has. So hmmm sounds like yeasties or whatever Adamsmama said.

Thanks!

Don't worry -- I didn't know what it was until about 2 yrs ago when I started having major problems processing these food chemicals. Salicylates are what is naturally found in many fruits/vegetables/fragrances and aspirin (it is like aspirin sensitivity). Amines are vasco-active chemicals, histamine is a type of amine. People with histamine/amine intolerance will have "pseudo-allergic" responses ... pseudo because they don't affect your immune system but they can feel exactly like a true allergy and can be just as serious.
